Cosart sharp in debut

I start today in Dunedin where the Astros belted the Blue Jays, 10-1.  Jonathan Villar got his first hit of the spring, going 1 for 2 late in the game.  Jarred Cosart was very effective, pitching the 4th and 5th innings, allowing no runs, just 1 hit and 1 walk, and 1 strike out. Anthony Gose had 1 at bat for Toronto, and Tyson Brummett pitched the final inning, and allowed no runs on 2 hits, with a strike out................Over in Lee County, the Twins took a 12-5 game from the Phillies.  The Phillies line up was filled with HomeSiders. Domonic Brown had a double, 2 walks, an RBI and scored 3 runs to pace the attack!  Ryan Howard had a walk and an RBI single, and Carlos Ruiz had 2 hits which drove in 3 runs.  Freddy Galvis, Zack Collier, Sebastian Valle and Darin Ruf all got in the game offensively, and after Antonio Bastardo tossed another scoreless inning, both Justin De Fratus and Brian Rosenberg each allowed 3 runs in 1 inning of work.

Out in the Cactus League, the Rockies beat San Diego, 6-3.  Josh Outman tossed a scoreless frame (2 hits) and recorded a hold for Colorado.  The other half of the Padres also lost, 11-6 to the Athletics.  Michael Taylor had a walk and an RBI for Oakland in that game.............In Goodyear, the Seattle Mariners beat the Indians, 5-1.  Michael Bourn had 1 of the Indians 6 hits, and Lou Marson picked up a walk in 3 plate appearances............In Scotsdale, Jason Donald was 0 for 2 and played shortstop for the Reds in their 14-6 win over the Diamondbacks. Tuffy Gosewisch was 1 for 2 for Snakes. These 2 were teammates in 2007 in Lakewood.

Phillies go deep to edge Yanks

Tuesday in Clearwater, the Yankees led the Phillies 3-1 heading to the bottom of the 8th inning, but a long home run (over the batters eye) by Domonic Brown made it 3-2 and a 2-run, 2-out blast into Frenchey's Tiki Bar in left by catcher Tommy Joseph gave to Fightin' Phils a 4-3 win, their first of the spring.  Joseph was acquired by Philadelphia from San Francisco in the Hunter Pence trade last summer.  It was the 2nd home run this spring for Brown, who has been looking like he is ready (healthy) for the season.

Kyle Kendrick made the start, throwing 22 pitches in his 2 innings, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits.  Ryan Howard had another hit and a walk in 3 plate appearances and Freddy Galvis was 0 for 1, and played a great shortsttop in relief of Jimmy Rollins.

In Kissimmee, the Tigers lost to some of the Astros, 9-4.  Jonathan Villar had a walk and a strike out in his at bats for Houston.  The rest of the Astros went to Port Charlotte and dropped a 7-2 game to the Rays.  Jason Jaramillo was 1 for 2 in that game..........In Jupiter, Travis d'Arnaud had a single and drove in a run with a sacrife fly for New York, but the Mets lost to the Marlins, 7-5.

Out in Arizona, the Reds lost again, this time 7-5 to the Padres.  Jason Donald started at third base, and was 0 for 2 in the game.  "J.D." has played a lot in the first week for the Reds, who are getting a good look at him, and giving him a chance to make the team as a utility player.................Over in Phoenix, Jesus Sanchez pitched another inning for the Brewers and gave up no runs, despite allowing 2 hits, and got credit for a hold in Milwaukee's 6-5 win over Seattle..........In Scotsdale, the Diamondbacks beat the Athletics, 9-4.  Tuffy Gosewisch walked and scored a run for Arizona in his only at bat of the game.

In Dunedin, the Twins beat Toronto, 8-4.   The Jays called on Bobby Korecky with 2 out and a runner at third base, and Korecky struck out the hitter, Joe Benson.  Maybe the Jays see Bobby as a left handed specialist?   Anthony Gose had a single and a walk in 2 at bats, and also stole a base.  It is early, but from here it looks like Anthony will be the victim of a numbers game, as the Jays have a lot of outfielders.  Hopefully for Gose, somebody will get moved and an oppurtunity will arise.  Last year's experience now under his belt, I think he is ready to build on that and take the next step.

Monday's notes

In Clearwater on Monday, the Detroit Tigers rocked the Phillies, 10-1.  The Phillies managed just 5 hits, Freddy Galvis had a single in his only at bat, and Ryan Howard had 2 for 3 and drove in the Phils lone run.  Darin Ruf (0 for 2), Carlos Ruiz (0 for 3) and Domonic Brown (0 for 1) also saw action. On the mound, Tyler Cloyd made his season debut with 2 scoreless innings, and Mike Stutes, looking to rebound from an injury-plagued 2012, worked an inning and gave up 2 runs on 2 walks and 1 hit.

In Dunedin, Tyson Brummett made his debut for the Blue Jays, throwing a scoreless inning and striking out 2 in the Jays' 4-2 loss to Boston.........In Jupiter, Josh Zeid threw an inning for the Astros, giving up a run on 2 hits to the Cardinals in St. Louis' 10-2 win.  Jonathan Villar was 0 for 2 for Houston.............Vance Worley made his debut for the Twins, and threw 2 scoreless innings (2 hits, 1 K) in Minnesota's 5-4 win over the Pirates.........In Port St. Lucie, Travis d'Arnaud got his first hit for the Mets, going 1 for 2, a line drive single on a 3-2 pitch after being down in the count 1-2.  New York dropped a 6-4 game to Washington.

In Glendale, Brian Schlitter threw an inning for the Cubs, allowing a run on 3 hits and a walk in the Cubs' 7-6 loss to the Dodgers.........In Pheonix, the Indians stayed undefeated with a 14-10win over Oakland.  Michael Bourn and Lou Marson each had a walk and a run scored for the Tribe............In Goodyear, the Reds beat the Brewers, 5-2.  Darren Byrd walked the first 3 hitters he faced, including Jason Donald, before getting a ground ball and a strike out. Donald had 2 walks and a stolen base on the day for Cincinatti.

Happ, Gose, lead Jays over Yanks

Sunday in Tampa, the Blue Jays shut out the Yankees, 2-0.  Jay Happ started for Toronto and threw 2 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and picked up the victory!  Happ also hit Curtis Granderson on the forearm, cracking a bone and leaving Granderson on the shelf until mid- May.  Anthony Gose was just 1 for 4, but the one was a rocket-triple to straight away centerfield with 2 out in the 3rd inning.  Gose then scored the first of the 2 Jays' runs.  The rest of Toronto's split squad stayed in Dunedin and dropped a 5-4 decision to the Orioles.  Bobby Korecky came on that game with 1 out and 2 men on base in the 2nd inning, and after walking the first hitter, retired the final 2 hitters, stranding all 3 baserunners!!

In Lakeland, the Phillies and Tigers played to a 5-5 tie.   Quintin Berry had a hit  and scored a run in 2 at bats for Detroit.  Ryan Howard had 2 doubles in 3 at bats and drove in a run,  and Domonic Brown had a pinch hit home run in the 8th inning, which was the tying run for Philadelphia!  Carlos Ruiz, who will be suspended 25 games to start the season (the ban does not include spring training, so he will play in Florida) had a single and a walk, scored a run and drove in another, and Freddy Galvis picked up a double in 3 at bats.  Darin Ruf and Zack Collier were each 0 for 3.  On the mound, Antonio Bastardo threw a scoreless inning (1 hit) and Jake Diekman allowed a run on a hit in his frame.  Cody Asche and Joe Savery also got into the 10-inning affair...........In Kissimmee, Travis d'Arnaud made his Mets' debut, going 0 for 3 in a 7-7 tie between New York and Houston.   On the Astros' side, Jonathan Villar had a walk and scored a run in 3 plate appearances, Jason Jaramillo had was also 0 for 2 with a walk, and Sergio Escalona threw 1 inning and allowed a run on 3 hits.

TRIBE BEATS REDS FOR 3RD STARIGHT DAY

The Indians shut out the Reds on just 1 hit, a single by Jason Donald against his former team was the lone safety for Cincinatti.  Donald walked in his other at bat............The rest of the Indians took a 7-4 game from the Brewers.  Carlos Carrasco started in that one and was rusty, giving up 4 runs, 3 earned on 4 hits and a walk in his spring debut.  Remember Carlos is still coming back from Tommy John surgery, which he tells me  is in the past and he is looking foward to a comeback 2013.  Carrasco is vying for a spot in the Indians' rotation............In Tempe, Michael Taylor was 0 for 4 for the Athletics, in Oakland's 7-5 win over the Angels.......In Scotsdale, the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies, 8-6.  Tuffy Gosewisch was 0 for 2 for Arizona, and Josh Outman threw a scoreless inning for Colorado.

The Phillies opened their preseason with an 8-3 loss to Houston.  Cole Hamels started and was very good, going 2 innings and allowing just 1 hit.  Brian Rosenberg threw the next 2 frames, and gave up 3 runs, 2 earned, on 5 hits and a walk, suffering the defeat. Justin DeFratus went the last 2 innings, and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits.  Jarred Cosart threw 2 perfect innings for the Astros.  On the offensive side, Ryan Howard and Darin Ruf were each 0 for 3, while Domonic Brown had a second inning single and scored a run.  Jonathan Villar was 0 for 2 for Houston.

Mike Zagurski had a great debur for the Pirates.  "Z-Man" retired the Rays in a 1-2-3 inning with just 3 pitches, recording a hold in the Pirates' 3-2 win........The Blue Jays rallied for 7 late runs to top the Tigers, 10-3.  Anthony Gose had a hit and a walk in 3 at bats, and scored a run in the Jays' 4-run 6th inning...........The Indians roughed up Alfredo Simon, who started for the Reds, and went on the a 13-10 win over Cincinatti.  Simon allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, in just 1.2 innings of work and absorbed the loss.  Jason Donald had a walk in 2 at bats for the Reds and Michael Bourn was 0 for 2 for the Indians..........The Brewers defeated the Athletics, 2-1.  Michael Taylor was 0 for 1 for Oakland, and Jesus Sanchez picked up the save for Milwaukee,  with a 5-pitch, 1-2-3 inning in the 9th.

Bourn joins Tribe

Late last night, the Cleveland Indians announced they have signed Michael Bourn to a 4-year, $48 million contract.  Bourn will join HomeSiders Carlos Carrasco and Lou Marson on the Cleveland roster, as the AL Central seems to be the "in" spot for former Claws this year!
