back spasms keep Slayden in extended

Jermey Slayden, who has made the IronPigs roster, will remain in Florida for a few more days until the back spasms that he has been suffering from let up. Slayden, a Georgia Tech grad, was disappointed with the Phillies choice saying, "I don't necessarily agree with it, but that's their decision." "Slay" has had a good spring, and was anxious to get the regular season started.

Outman in Athletics rotation

Josh Outman has earned the 5th spot in Oakland's rotation according to manager Bob Geren, who announced his starters today. Outman won 14 games in 2006 for the BlueClaws. The A's open with 4 games in Anaheim, making Josh the pitcher for the home opener, Friday against Seattle.

Simon earns rotation spot for Birds

The Orioles have announced that Alfredo Cabrera Simon has won a spot in the starting rotation to open the season. Alfredo has allowed just 2 earned runs so far this spring and will make one more preseason start before his season debut late next week. The Orioles play their first 3 games against the Yankees, followed by 3 with the Rays, all at home.

major leaguers breaking camp

Most of the major league teams will be breaking camp today or tomorrow in preparation for opening day.

Wednesday in Florida, the Red Sox beat the Pirates, 4-3. Jason Jaramillo recieved a walk in his only at bat. The Astros stopped the Reds, 7-2, with Michael Bourn having a big day. Bourn had 2 singles, a double, a walk, 2 stolen bases, scored twice and drove in another run. That is Michael's second 3-hit game in less than a week. Just in time for the opener!!

The Yankees beat the Phillies 8-5, scoring all their runs off Kyle Drabek (2.1 IP, 5 runs, 4 earned, 5 hits, 2 walks, 1 strike out) and J.A. Happ (2.2 IP, 3 runs, 4 hits, 2 walks, 1 strike out). For Drabek, the start was a reward for his hard work in rehab after his surgery. In Happ's case, if he was a little off his game after learning he was excluded from the rotation, I can forgive him for that. After all, he did everything the Phillies asked and was just beat out by a superior effort from Chan Ho Park. Carlos Ruiz was 1 for 4 and scored a run for the Phils.

minor league notes

Wednesday in Dunedin, the BlueClaws defeated the Lansing Lugnuts, 4-3. Zack Collier homered for Lakewood, and Anthony Gose continued his hot hitting, with 2 hits and a walk, and 2 RBI. Santos Hernandez struck out 4 of the 5 hitters he faced and Ryan Bergh recorded the save throwing a scoreless 9th. I think I have 4 of the 5 in the rotation figured out: Tyler Cloyd, Justin DeFratus, Jacob Diekman, and Jason Knapp. I am still not sure of the 5th. Anybody out there with a clue?

The Dunedin Jays topped Clearwater, 6-4. Dominic Brown had a double and scored a run, and Jared ( "Simon says, game over") Simon picked up 2 Ks in a scoreless 9th.

Reading beat New Hampshire, 5-4. Michael Taylor (home run), Tuffy Gosewisch, Wilkin Ruan and Kevin Mahar had 2 hits each, and Sergio Escalona put up 2 zeros for Reading.

Edgar Garcia

There seems to be some confusion about Edgar. Everyone I speak to is surprised (read that SHOCKED) that he would be released. I am double checking, because everyone else seems to be as in the dark on this as I am. He is not listed on the latest work group lists that I have, but I guess it could be an oversight. I'll keep checking.

Tuesday's HomeSide Highlights

It's April, HomeSiders and that means baseball's regular season is upon us. The Caribbean Series was fun and the WBC was more entertaining than I anticipated, but its APRIL, BABY!!!

The Phillies and Braves will kick off the major league season Sunday night on ESPN, and the minor league teams swing into action next Thursday.

In Clearwater, on Tuesday, future BlueClaw Anthony Gose, doubled, homered and drove in 4 runs in Lakewood's 10-2 win over the Charleston River Dogs. Luis Arzeno also homered, driving in a pair and scoring twice. Jason Knapp struck out 6, allowing just 1 run. The Tampa Yankees topped Clearwater, 6-4, despite 3 hits, including 2 doubles by Cody Overbeck. Carlos Carrasco pitched 5 innings for Lehigh Valley, and gave up 10 hits while striking out 5. I hear Carlos is working on a new grip for his curveball. The Yankees won that game, 9-6. Trenton also defeated Reading, 7-5, although shortstop Ozzie Chavez picked 3 of Reading's 10 hits.

Jason Jaramillo is still in camp with Pittsburgh, and after his game winning hit Monday, walked twice, scored a run and drove one in in the Pirates 12-8 loss to the Twins on Tuesday. The Astros beat the Braves, 8-3, Michael Bourn had a triple and scored a run in that one. The Phillies pounded the Blue Jays, 9-1, Ryan Howard had an RBI single (that's 22 RBI for Ryan).

Out in Phoenix, Josh Outman and the A's beat the Royals, 7-2. Josh went 5.2 innings, giving up just 2 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk, picking up 6 K's. Robinson Tejeda threw a scoreless frame for KC, striking out 2 of the 3 hitters he faced.

I notice there are 3 games on MLBN today, Orioles/Marlins at 1:00, Rangers/Angels at 5:00 and Diamondbacks/Brewers at 9:00.

Only 8 days until the first game in Lakewood!!
