Jays call up Carpenter

Happy 4th to everyone!!  The first thing I notice this morning is that Toronto has called up Andrew Carpenter from Las Vegas.  Carpenter was 6-3 in 24 games with Las Vegas this year, after winning 17 games for Clearwater in 2007, and making 17 appearances for the Phillies, including 12 last year.

The Phillies opened their series in New York Tuesday, and the Mets were all over them.  Vance Worley (4-5, 3.46) allowed 6 runs on 10 hits and 1 walk in just 4 innings of work as New York took an 11-1 win.  Jacob Diekman also allowed 2 runs, 1 earned on 2 hits in his inning, and Carlos Ruiz (.354) was 1 for 4,  his 12th home run of the season accounting for Philadelphia's run.

In Detroit, the Twins rallied for 2 late runs to defeat the Tigers, 8-6.  Quintin Berry (.295) had a walk and an infield single for Detroit......In Atlanta, Michael Bourn (.305) had 2 walks, a 3-run triple, and scored 3 runs for the Braves in their 10-3 pounding of the Cubs.  Remember to vote for Michael for the final spot on the All-Star team!

Monday madness

Monday night in Detroit, the Twins got past the Tigers, 6-4.  Quintin Berry (.295) had a hit and a walk, and scored a run for the Tigers........In Atlanta, Michael Bourn (.304) had 2 hits, stole base #23, and scored the lone run for the Braves in a 4-1 loss to the Cubs...........In Phoenix, Mike Zagurski pitched 1 inning for the Diamondbacks, allowing a run on a hit and a walk, as Arizona lost to the Padres, 6-2.

Another wild one in Lakewood, as the "cardiac Claws" scored 2 in the 11th to steal a game from Hagerstown, 11-10.  The last 3 days, these 2 teams have just gone back and forth at each other by the scores of 12-10, 11-9, and 11-10 yesterday!!  On Monday, the Claws rapped out 18 more hits, 3 each for Tim Carver, Maikel Franco, and Kelly Dugan, and Aaron Altherr added 2 hits and a walk-off bases loaded walk to give the team the victory.  The middle of this line up has really found it's groove in the heat, as Lakewood improved to 7-5 in the second half.  The home stand wraps up tonight with 1 more game against the Suns.  Buckle up!!

In Allentown, the first place IronPigs rallied for 3 in the 8th, 1 in the 9th, and won it in the 10th, 5-4 over the Yankees.  Cody Overbeck had 3 hits, and Ryan Howard had an RBI double during the 3-run 8th inning rally.

In Reading, the R-Phils managed just 4 hits in a 6-3 loss to New Hampshire.  Leandro Castro (.311) had 2 of the hits, one of them a 3-run homer to account for all the Reading runs. Leandro now had an 11-game hitting streak. Julio Rodriguez (5-2, 3.59) had a rare bad day, allowing 6 runs in 4 innings, and Tim Kennelly saved the bullpen by throwing the final inning!

In Clearwater, Adam Morgan, Hector Neris and Tyler Knigge combined for a 4-hit shut out, and Edgar Duran and Carlos Alonso had 2 hits each as the Threshers beat Brevard County, 4-0.

In Reno, Anthony Gose had his 3rd consecutive 2-hit game for Las Vegas in their 15-8 loss to the Aces.  Anthony was only thrown out stealing for only the 7th time this year, he has been successful 29 times!........In Corpus Christi, Jonathan Singleton broke out of a long drought with 3 hits, including a home run (#12), and Jonathan Villar hit a walk-off 2-run home run in the bottom of the 9th to give the Hooks a 5-4 win over Tulsa........In Modesto, Domingo Santana (.296) had 2 more hits and a walk, driving in 2 runs for Lancaster in an 8-7 win.

Lakewood roster changes

The Phillies have sent Hoby Milner to Williamsport this morning and promoted Jeff Broussard. Broussard made 4 appearances for the Cross Cutters.  Lakewood also added catcher Gabriel Lino, who was acquired in the Jim Thome trade.  Lino was hitting .218 in 54 games for Delmarva.

Ironpigs sweep into first

In Allentown Sunday, the IronPigs swept a doubleheader from Pawtucket to reclaim first place in the IL North. Mike Spidale (.252) had 3 hits, an RBI and scored 2 runs and Steve Susdrof  (.298) had 2 hits including a home run as Lehigh Valley took the day game, 8-5.  BJ Rosenberg started and lasted 4 innings, allowed a run on 3 hits and a walk, striking out 2.  Mike Cisco earned his fisrt AAA win with 2 perfect innings, before Joe Savery was lit up for 4 runs on 3 hits in just 1.1 innings.  In the night game, Susdorf had another hit, and Tuffy Gosewisch chipped in with a hit and a walk as the Ironpigs grabbed a 2-1 win.  After 3 nights with Lakewood, Ryan Howard was 0 for 2 for the Pigs in the night contest.

After 2 good starts for Reading, Mario Hollands had a rough one yesterday in Baseballtown.  Mario (2-1 for Reading) allowed 4 in the 1st, and 6 runs in 6 innings overall, and Reading dropped a 7-5 decision to New Hampshire.  Leandro Castro (.307) extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI double, and is hitting .436 over the stretch........In Clearwater, Austin Wright was the victim of some bad defense, as Harold Martinez and John Hill each made an error in a 5-run 5th inning for Brevard County, and the Manatees went on to a 10-3 win.  All of the runs in that inning were unearned, but Wright still suffered the loss to fall to 7-3.  Austin Brough allowed a run on 2 hits in his inning.

In Lakewood, the Suns stopped the BlueClaws 3-game winning streak with an 11-9 win on a blistering hot afternoon at First Energy Park. Aaron Altherr had a double, and a long 2-run homer into the picnic area under the scoreboard in center field.  It was home run #7 for Aaron, who also walked once and scored 3 times.  Chris Duffy (.405) belted a 3-run shot and has extended his hitting streak to 17 games, and in 12 of the 17 he has had multiple hits.  This is as hot an any BlueClaw has ever been over an extended period.  The team record hitting streak is 24 games by Jiwan James 2 years ago.  Duffy has hit 3 home runs in the homestand so far.  Kyrell Hudson had 2 more hits, he is 6 for 9 the last 2 games, as did Bob Stumpo and Maikel Franco.  Hoby Milner, who was drafted in June out of Univeristy of Texas and pitched just 5.2 innings for Williamsport, started and gave up 5 runs on 5 hits in 3 innings.  His next start will come in West Virginia next week.  Beware of the Toast Man in Charleston!

In Modesto, Domingo Santana (.292) belted a 2-run home run in the top of the 1st inning and Lancaster rode it to a 3-1 win over the Nuts. (Yes, the Modesto team is the Nuts) It was home run #11 for Domingo, and RBIs 51 & 52.  Not bad for a kid who will not be 20 for another month!!..............In Reno, the Aces beat Las Vegas, 8-6.  Anthony Gose (.298) was 2 for 5 for the 51s........In a wild one in Nashville, the Sounds got past the Iowa Cubs, 13-12.  Adrian Cardenas (.328) had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, and a walk, scored twice, and drove in a run for Iowa, and Jason Jaramillo had a walk and scored for Nashville.......In Tucson, Jesus Merchan had 2 hits, including a triple and drove in 3 runs for the Padres in their 10-6 win over Salt Lake......In Lake Elsinore, Travis Mattair (.259) had 2 hits and knocked in a run (#44)  for Bakersfield, and the Blaze beat the Storm, 4-2.

Hamels & Ruiz named NL stars

First thing this morning is to congratulate both Cole Hamels and Carlos Ruiz on their selections for the All-Star Game next week in Kansas City.  Michael Bourn is 1 of the 5 candidates that the fans can vote for, so go online and get Micheal into the game, also!!

Ruiz (.356) had 1 hit on Sunday, as the Marlins completed the sweep of the Phillies with a 5-2 win.  Antonio Bastardo allowed a walk and a 2-run home run by Hanley Ramirez in his inning.

ESPN is reporting that the Phillies will be listening to offers for both Cole Hamels and Shane Victorino.  Both are in the final stage of their current contract.

In Baltimore, the Indians beat the Orioles, 6-2.  Lou Marson (.286) was 1 for 3, with an RBI and even stole a base and  Jason Donald made his return to the majors with a double and 2 walks for the Tribe.

In St Pete, Quintin Berry (.296) had a walk and scored a run for the Tigers in their 5-3 win over the Rays.  The Tigers are now just 1 game under .500 and making a push in the AL Central.

In New York, the Yankees beat Gavin Floyd and the White Sox, 4-2.  Gavin (6-8) struggled with his control, walking 5 and allowing 4 runs on 8 hits in just 5.1 innings of work.

Comeback Claws do it again

I have to begin right here in Lakewood, as the BlueClaws are having a great home stand.  Once again, for the second time in 3 nights, Lakewood spotted the opposition a 6-0 advantage before coming back for the win.  Saturday it was the Hagerstown Suns who jumped out to the big lead, only the see the BlueClaws respond for a 12-9 victory!  Kyrell Hudson led the 15-hit comeback attack with 4 hits, stole his team-leading 23rd base, and scored 2 runs and knocked in another.  Hudson has now hit in 5 straight games, going 9 for 20 over that span.  Alejandro Villalobos had 3 hits, a single, a double, and a triple and knocked in 3 runs, and  Chris Duffy had 2 more hits and an RBI.  Duffy has now hit in 16 straight games, and 11 of those have been multi-hit performances.  Maikel Franco got the game-winner, a bases clearing double in the bottom of the 8th inning to complete the comeback.  Ryan Howard had 2 hits, 3 walks, an RBI and scored 2 runs, and is 5 for 8 over his 3 game rehab stint.  The Claws are now 6-4 in the second half and trail first place Hickory by 1 game.

In Reading, Sebastian Valle and Darin Ruf each had 2 hits including a home run as the R-Phils defeated New Hampshire, 4-3.  Trevor May picked up his 7th win with 5 innings of work, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 6 walks (too many!), and Jay Johnson (3rd hold) and Lisalberto Bonilla (2nd save) pitched scoreless relief........In Clearwater, Edgar Duran had 3 hits, and Jim Murphy and Carlos Alonso had 2 hits each, but the Threshers lost to Lakeland, 6-4.  Jesse Biddle went the first 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks, but the loss went to Juan Sosa who allowed 3 runs in his 2 innings.  Tyler Knigge threw another scoreless frame, dropping that ERA down to 0.68.  While we are moving pitchers around, don't you  think we could move Knigge up?  I do!!

In Nashville, recently returned Adrian Cardenas (.315) was 1 for 5 with a stolen base for the Iowa Cubs, who dropped a 4-3 game to the Sounds.  Jason Jaramillo (.250) had a walk and scored a run for Nashville.......In Omaha, the Storm Chasers got past Albuquerque, 8-7.  Will Savage started for the Isotopes,  and gave up 7 runs, just 4 of them earned on 12 hits in just 4 innings, registering no decision.......In Reno, Anthony Gose (.292) had 2 hits, a walk, an RBI, and scored 2 runs for Las Vegas, who beat the Aces, 7-2...........In Tucson, Jesus Merchan came off the DL, and had 1 for 4 for the Padres in their 10-7 loss to Salt Lake............In Corpus Christi, Jonathan Villar (.264) had 2 hits and 2 walks, knocked in a run and scored 3 times for the Hooks as they beat the Naturals, 13-7.

Marson's 4 hits pace Tribe

In Baltimore, Lou Marson rapped out 4 hits (2 singles, a double and a triple) and also reached base on a walk, knocked in a run and scored 3 times for the Indians, as they beat the Orioles, 11-5.  Marson lifted his average up to .284 and regular playing time has finally helped him find his rythym.

In Atlanta, Michael Bourn (.307) had 3 walks and a double, drove in a run, stole 2 bases and scored twice as the Braves evened their series with Nationals with a 7-5 victory.  Michael has now stolen 22 bases, and is 3rd in the National League as he looks for his 3rd stolen base crown.  This is his free agent year and he is looking for his big payday after this contract expires.

In St. Pete, the Detroit Tigers exploded for 5 runs in final 2 innings to take a 6-2 victory over the Rays.  Quintin Berry (.306) had a walk and a hit for the Tigers.

Both Cole Hamels and Jay Happ pitched well enough to win on Saturday, but both lost their starts by identical 3-2 scores.  In Miami, Hamels (10-4, 3.07) threw 7 innings against the Marlins, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks. Carlos Ruiz (.358)  had a single and a double and was stranded on base as the game ended.  In Chicago, Happ (6-8, 4.81) went 6 innings, allowing the Cubs 3 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks.  Jay is pitching a little better the last couple of starts.
