more from Monday

I was short on time this morning, but here are some of the rest of Monday's highlights:

In Allentown, the Bisons made it a sweep of the IronPigs with an 8-2 win.  Anthony Gose was 0 for 4 for Buffalo, but walked, drove in a run, and scored another one.  Tyler Cloyd started the game and went 6 innings, and allowed 6 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks, and Leadro Castro had 2 hits for Lehigh Valley.

In Albuquerque, Jonathan Villar had 2 more hits for the RedHawks in their 8-1 loss to the Isotopes.  Villar has had 4 2-hit games in a row, and is 14 for 32 (.436) in  the last 8 games.

In Lakeland, Aaron Altherr had 2 hits and drove in the lone Threshers' run in a 3-1 loss to the Flying Tigers.  Infielder Jonathan Roof had 3 hits for Clearwater, and is hitting .339 so far this year.  Ethan Stewart threw 4 shut out frames, allowing 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5.  Luis Paulino took the loss, but 2 of the 3 runs he allowed were unearned.

Biddle, Happ & Pettibone

The only thing wrong with Jonathan Pettibone's debut last night was he did not get the win.  Pettibone shook off some early jitters and settled into a respectable outing.  In all, he went 5.1 innings and allowed 2 runs (both home runs) on 6 hits, NO walks and struck out 6, leaving the tied at 2-2.  The Phillies scored later to take a 3-2 win over the Pirates.  Antonio Bastardo threw another scoreless frame, and Ryan Howard was 1 for 4 on the night............A similar story in Baltimore where Jay Happ pitched a strong 6 innings for the Blue Jays, and gave up just 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks, with 6 Ks.  Happ left the game in a 1-1 tie and the Orioles won it with a run in the bottom of the 9th.........The HomeSide did pick up a win when the Reds rallied for a walk off win by scoring 3 in the bottom of the 13th to steal a 5-4 win from the Cubs and make a winner of Alfredo Simon.  Alfredo had allowed 2 runs (just 1 earned ) in the top of the inning.  The win was the 2nd this week for Simon and #6 in the majors for HomeSiders this year.

The star of the night was Reading's Jesse Biddle.  In Harrisburg, Biddle (2-1, 2.16) took a perfect game into through 6 frames before surrendering a hit and 2 walks in the 7th.  He struck out a career high 16 of his 21 outs, and even had 2 doubles and scored a run in the Fightin Phil's 3-2 win over the Senators.  Zack Collier had 2  hits, including a 2-run home run for Reading.

Pettibone is #50

Jonathan Pettibone has been called up to the Phillies and will make his debut tonight in Philadelphia against the Pirates.   When the game begins, "Bone" will be  #50 on the list of former BlueClaws to play in the major leagues.  Jon won 8 games for Lakewood during the 2010 season.

Mitch and Myers

In Philadelphia, the Phillies cored 4 in the 8th inning to defeat the Cardinals, 7-3.  Domonic Brown had a single and scored a run during the rally, and   Ryan Howard was 1 for 3 with an RBI (#6).  Kyle Kendrick started and was solid for 6 innings, giving up just 2 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk, striking out 6 and receiving no decision.  Antonio Bastardo walked 1 of the 2 hitters he faced, and that runner scored an UNearned run...........In Chicago, Gavin Floyd was also very good, without gaining a result.  Floyd went 6 innings against the Twins, and allowed 1 run on just 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 6 and leaving the game with a 2-1 lead.  The Twins rallied for a 5-3 win and Floyd is still searching for his first win.......In St. Pete, Michael Taylor made a pinch hitting appearance for Oakland (lined out) in their 8-1 loss to the Rays.........In Cincinnati, the Reds scored 8 times in the bottom of the 7th inning, and then brought in Alfredo Simon, who threw a 1-2-3 8th.

Ouch!!

In Columbus, Quintin Berry hit his 1st home run of the year for Toledo in the Mud Hens' 3-0 win over the Clippers.  Lou Marson had a single and a walk for Columbus as his rehab assignment continues............In Albuquerque, Jonathan Villar had a single, a double, a walk, an RBI, and scored a run for Oklahoma City to help to RedHwks to a 10-7 win.  Jason Jaramillo was 0 for 5 and continues to struggle.  Josh Zeid tossed another scoreless frame (1 walk, 1 K) and was awarded a hold...............In San Antonio, D'Arby Myers (.319) had 3 hits and a walk and scored a run for the Rock Hounds in Midland's 3-1 win over the Missions............In North Little Rock, Mike Cisco threw 2 scoreless innings for Arkansas, but the Travelers dropped a 3-1, 10-inning game to Springfield.

Worley, Collier & Carrasco

We start this morning in Cincinnati, where Alfredo Simon pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 13th inning against Miami, and then got the win when the Reds scored in bottom half for a 2-1 win.   It was the first win of the year for Simon and #5 for the HomeSide in the majors this year.......In Chicago, Vance Worley threw 7 solid innings against the White Sox, allowing just 1 run, on 5 hits and 2 walks, striking out 7, and leaving the game in a 1-1-tie.  The lone run came on a home run by leadoff hitter, Alejandro De Aza.  The Twins won it in the 10th, 2-1..............In Philadelphia, the Phillies were shut out on 3 hits by the Cardinals' Lance Lynn.  Freddy Galvis was 0 for 4, and Domonic Brown had 2 walks in the game.  Joe Savery threw a scoreless 9th inning in his season debut.

In Allentown, the Buffalo Bisons swept a doubleheader from the ironPigs, 8-4, and 2-1.  In the opener, Anthony Gose hit a home run, walked twice and scored 3 runs for the Bisons, and Cody Overbeck banged his 4th home run run of the year for the Pigs.  In the nightcap, Gose (.320) had 2 more hits, including a 7th inning double and scored the game winning run. Justin De Fratus posted 2 more scoeless frames, despite allowing 3 hits and 2 walks, and has now thrown 9 innings and allowed just 1 UNearned run for Lehigh Valley.  Mike Stutes took the loss and the blown save, allowing both runs after coming in with a 1-0 lead..................In Richmond, Zack Collier had a double and 2 triples, knocked in 2 runs and scored another one to pace the Fightin' Phils to a 3-2 win in the first game of their doubleheader.  Anthony Hewitt (.333) also had a single and a triple for Reading. Hector Neris made the spot start, and gave Reading 4 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk.  The Flying Squirrels came back in the second game for a 4-1 win and a split.  Edgar Duran (.340) had 2 of Reading's 5 hits in that one.............In Clearwater, the Threshers evened their record at 8-8 with a 6-3 win over Brevard County.  Maikel Franco (.318) and Brock Stassi had 2 hits each for the Threshers, backing a solid outing by Hoby Milner.  Hoby went 6 innings, and gave up just 1 run on 5 hits, NO walks, striking out 5 to notch his first win of the season.   Kenny Giles retired the only 2 hitters he faced, and Colby Shreve went 2 frames, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk.

In Columbus, Carlos Carrasco looked like his old self, throwing 6 shut out innings, and giving up just 2 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 10!  Quintin Berry fanned twice against him, and was 0 for 4 on the day as the Clippers squeaked out a 1-0 win with an 8th inning run.  It is amazing how good Carrasco can be with Lou Marson behind the plate for him.  Lou was 0 for 3 in the game, still on  rehab assignment...........In Nashville, the Sounds beat Omaha, 11-5.  Jesus Sanchez tossed 2 more scoreless innings and was the winning pitcher for Nashville. Jesus is now 2-0, and still has not allowed an earned run in his 9 innings of work so far!...........In Albuquerque, Jarred Cosart's strong start continued with 5 solid innings against the Isotopes. Jarred (2-0, 1.02) allowed just 1 run on 3 hits and NO walks, striking out 5 for the victory in OKC's 3-1 win.   Jonathan Villar had 2 more hits  and has pushed his average up to .207 with 10 for his last 24 (that's .417) over the last 6 games..............In San Antonio, D'Arby Myers (.279) had a single and a double, stole his 4th base, knocked in a run and scored another for Midland to help the Rock Hounds defeat the Missions, 4-1..............In Round Rock, the Express had an 8-2 lead when they brought in Lisalverto Bonilla.  Bonilla got out of the 8th inning, but needed relief help in the 9th, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks, as the Express held on for an 8-7 win.

rain falls across northeast

The Phillies have recalled Joe Savery from Lehigh Valley, and the Colorado Rockies have recalled Josh Outman from Colorado Springs.   With Josh' recall, we now have 11 active HomeSiders in the major leagues.

In Philadelphia on Friday, the Phillies defeated St Louis, 8-2 in a rain shortened game.  Freddy Galvis (left field) was 0 for 4 in the game.

In Reno, the SkySox defeated the Aces, 5-2.  Tuffy Gosewisch hit his 3rd home run for the Aces, and walked and scored their other run.  Tuffy also gunned down 2 of 3 would-be base stealers...........In Toledo, the Mud Hens won a pair from Columbus, finishing off the suspended game with a 3-1 win, and taking the regular game, 4-3 with 2 in the bottom of the 9th.  Quintin Berry had another hit in the second game, and his average is .276 for the Mud Hens so far................In Oklahoma City, Jonathan Villar had a double and a triple, an RBI and scored a run for the RedHawks in their 5-2 win over Round Rock.  After starting out 2 for 34, Jonathan is now 8 for his last 20, a .400 clip for the last 5 games.  Now if teammate (and fellow HomeSider)  Jason Jaramillo could only catch a little fire, that would be good.  "JJ" was 0 for 3, and is just 3 for 26 in 9 games so far.   Josh Zeid picked up the final 4 outs and recorded his 1st save.  Josh came on and stranded the tying run on base in the 8th, and then threw a scoreless 9th.  In 6 appearances covering 6.1 innings, Zeid has allowed just 1 run on 3 hits and 4 walks, striking out 11.......In North Little Rock, the Springfield Cardinals swept a doubleheader from the Travelers, 3-2 & 3-0.  Mike Cisco threw another scorless inning in the first game, and has now thrown 7.1 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk, striking out 6!..........In Huntsville, the Tennessee Smokies topped the Stars, 8-1.  Brian Schlitter threw 2 scoreless innings (3 hits, 3 Ks).  Like Cisco, Schlitter has not allowed an earned run yet............In San Antonio, the Missions shut out Midland, 10-0.  The Rock Hounds had just 5 hits, 1 a single by D'Arby Myers.  Myers is hitting .263, and has played in 8 of Midland's 14 games so far.

Both Reading and Lehigh Valley were rained out, but in Clearwater, the comeback of Nick Hernandez took another positive step.  Hernandez (2-0, 2.12) , who sat out 2 years with injuries, threw 6 more solid innings against the Manatees in a 13-1 Threshers' victory, allowing just a run on 4 hits, 1 walk and 7 Ks.  Gabriel Arias and Mike Nesseth threw scoreless relief to seal the win.   Maikel Franco and Harold Martinez were among 5 different Threshers with at least 2 hits, and Aaron Altherr had a hit and 3 walks.  The enire starting 9 had at least 1 hit in a balanced 15-hit attack........In Lakewood, the BlueClaws dropped a 7-2 game to Savannah.  Silver linings for me: Angelo Mora had 2 hits for just the second time this year, and the ball is really jumping off the bat of Art Charles.

The Corpus Christi Hooks have placed Domingo Santana on the 7-day DL, effective the 17th.  I do not know why.
