Hamels, Happ lose; 3 hits for Bourn

In Philadelphia Thursday, the Dodgers completed the 4-game sweep of the Phillies, coming from behind to top the Fightin' Phils, 8-3.  Cole Hamels , who had a hit and scored a run in the Phillies' 3-run 3rd inning was charged with the loss, his second in a row to fall to 8-3 on the year. Cole allowed 4 runs, 3 earned on 6 hits and 1 walk, striking out 6 on the way..........In Houston, the news was no better for Jay Happ, as the Cardinals got the the Astros' lefthander for 4 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks (!) en route to a 14-2 spanking of Houston.  Jay is now 4-6, 4.94 for the year.

In Detroit, the Tigers salvaged the final game of their series with the Indians, 7-5.  Quintin Berry (.306) led off the 1st with a single and started a 4-run rally from which the Indians never recovered.  Lou Marson had a hit and scored a run for Cleveland, extending his hitting streak to 7 consecutive games........In Miami, Michael Bourn (.305) had 3 hits and a walk,  scored 2 runs and drove in 3 more to help the Braves to an 8-2 win over the Marlins.

Galvis disabled

In Detroit Tuesday, the Cleveland Indians kept up their winning ways against the Tigers with a 9-6 victory, the 5th in a row this year over Detroit.   Quintin Berry (.310) had a double, an RBI and scored a run for the Tigers......In Philadelphia, the Dodgers made it 3 in a row, defeating Kyle Kendrick and the Phillies, 7-6.  Kyle (2-5) had some control issues, walking 5 and allowing 5 runs on 4 hits in 5.2 innings of work.  Antonio Bastardo threw a scoreless inning, striking out the side, and Jacob Diekman allowed 2 walks and a hit, resulting in an UNearned run, while striking out both of his outs.  Freddy Galvis was removed from the game, and then placed on the 15-day DL, with a back strain.  Too bad for Freddy, who is having a good rookie year.  Carlos Ruiz (.358) was 1 for 3 and scored a run for the Phillies.........In Phoenix, the Diamondbacks got to Josh Outman for 5 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks in just 3 innings, and went on to a 6-1 win over the Rockies.

In Allentown, Tyler Cloyd threw 8 solid innings, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits and 1 walk, striking out 7 in the IronPigs' 5-1 win over Gwinnett.  Cloyd improves to 5-1, 2.26, and also had a single, a double, a walk, an RBI and scored a run!!  Mike Spidale (.309) had 3 hits and an RBI for the Pigs.

In Reading, Jonathan Pettibone almost matched Cloyd's effort. "Bone" (5-5, 3.79) put in a strong 7-inning performance against Altoona, yielding just 2 runs on 7 hits, NO walks, and struck out 3 in Reading's 7-2 win.  Sebastian Valle smacked his 6th home run, and drove in 3 runs to help lead the attack.

In Erie, the Trenton Thunder beat the Sea Wolves and Zack Segovia, 7-4.  Zack (5-6) went 5 innings for Erie, and gave up 5 runs, 4 earned, on 9 hits and 2 walks, striking out 3.  That was bad, but what happened to Josh Zeid was worse.Josh came into the game last night in the top of the 7th inning, with Corpus Christi ahead, 1-0, and the bases loaded with nobody out Midland.  Josh hit a batter, walked in a run, and then allowed a grand slam home, and the Rock Hounds stole 6-3 win.  E-gads!!

Is the All-Star game coming back to Lakewood?

The Lakewood BlueClaws will be making a "big announcement" on Wednesday, June 20 in Seaside Heights.  They are not saying anything more, but my inkling is we have not had the All-Star Game in Lakewood since 2002, and I bet 2013's festivities are coming back to the Jersey shore.  Remember, I have no official knowledge of this, but you heard it first here!

Kleven, Buchanan, Biddle all honored

Lets start in Lakewood, where first we have to say congratulations to pitcher Colin Kleven, who was the lone BlueClaw to be selected to play in the All-Star game in Charleston in 2 weeks!!  Colin has been the most consistent of Lakewood's hurlers so far this year, and will throw again tonight against Lexington.  Congratulations are also in order for David Buchanan, and Jesse Biddle, who were named Eastern League and Florida State League pitchers of the week respectively for the week ended June 3.

On Tuesday night, the Claws broke their 8-game losing streak with a 5-4 win over the Legends. Kelly Dugan had a single, a double, and a walk, and Chris Duffy had a big 2-RBI hit to pace the Claws' attack.  Ethan Stewart notched his first win of the season, throwing 6 solid innings, and giving up just 2 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks, striking out 5.  Luis Paulino (1.90) threw 2 excellent innings of relief to pick up his 2nd save.

In Allentown, Domonic Brown (.282) had 4 hits, including 2 home runs and drove in 3 runs to pace the IronPigs attack in a 10-1 win over the Braves. Steve Susdorf (.364 since his promotion) added 3 hits and also drove in 3 runs.  BJ Rosenberg threw 2 innings for Lehigh Valley, allowing a run on a hit, but struck out 4 of his 6 outs.

In St. Lucie, the Mets scored a run off of Hector Neris in the bottom of the 9th inning to take a 3-2 win from the Threshers.  Peter Lavin, Albert Cartwright, Cody Asche, and Jim Murphy all had 2 hits for Clearwater.........In Reading, the R-Phils wasted a great performance from Julio Rodriguez, and dropped a 1-0 decision to Altoona.  J-Rod (3-1, 2.67) went 8 innings, and gave up just 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks, striking out 6 in the hard luck loss.  Cesar Hernandez and Sebastian Valle had 2 hits apiece for Reading.

In Tacoma, Michael Taylor (.327) had 2 hits and scored 2 runs for Sacramento, in the River Cats' 8-1 win over the Rainiers.....In Columbus, Jason Donald (.328) had 3 hits and a walk, and scored 3 times as the Clippers destroyed Buffalo, 21-3!!

8 HomeSiders in action

Tuesday night in Detroit, the Indians beat the Tigers, 4-2.  Lou Marson was 2 for 4, including an RBI triple, and scored a run for Cleveland.  Lou now has a 6 game hitting streak going.  Quintin Berry was 0 for 3 for the Tigers, but led off the first being hit by a pitch, stealing 2nd, his 7th steal already and scoring a run.  He also made another fine, running, over-the-shoulder catch!!.......In Philadelphia, both Carlos Ruiz (.358) and Freddy Galvis (.228) were 0 for 4 as the Philles lost a 2-1 game to the Dodgers............In Miami, the Braves pounded the Marlins, 11-0.  Michael Bourn (.298) had a hit and scored a run for Atlanta.........In Cincinnati, Alfredo Simon (1.66) threw a scoreless inning (1 hit, 1 K) for the Reds in their 8-4 loss to the Pirates..........In Milwaukee, Adrian Cardenas had another pinch hit opportunity for the Cubs,  in which he walked and then scored a run in the Cubs' 10-0 win over the Brew Crew.............In Phoenix, Mike Zagurski tossed a 1-2-3 9th inning for the Diamondbacks, as Arizona shut out Colorado, 10-0.
