The Phillies opened their preseason with an 8-3 loss to Houston. Cole Hamels started and was very good, going 2 innings and allowing just 1 hit. Brian Rosenberg threw the next 2 frames, and gave up 3 runs, 2 earned, on 5 hits and a walk, suffering the defeat. Justin DeFratus went the last 2 innings, and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits. Jarred Cosart threw 2 perfect innings for the Astros. On the offensive side, Ryan Howard and Darin Ruf were each 0 for 3, while Domonic Brown had a second inning single and scored a run. Jonathan Villar was 0 for 2 for Houston.
Mike Zagurski had a great debur for the Pirates. "Z-Man" retired the Rays in a 1-2-3 inning with just 3 pitches, recording a hold in the Pirates' 3-2 win........The Blue Jays rallied for 7 late runs to top the Tigers, 10-3. Anthony Gose had a hit and a walk in 3 at bats, and scored a run in the Jays' 4-run 6th inning...........The Indians roughed up Alfredo Simon, who started for the Reds, and went on the a 13-10 win over Cincinatti. Simon allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, in just 1.2 innings of work and absorbed the loss. Jason Donald had a walk in 2 at bats for the Reds and Michael Bourn was 0 for 2 for the Indians..........The Brewers defeated the Athletics, 2-1. Michael Taylor was 0 for 1 for Oakland, and Jesus Sanchez picked up the save for Milwaukee, with a 5-pitch, 1-2-3 inning in the 9th.
