The Phillies' home opener started out well enough, as Philadelphia took a 4-0 lead early, only to see the Royals score 13 straight runs en route to a 13-4 win. After starting out with 4 scoreless frames, Kyle Kendrick allowed 2 runs in the 5th and left the game with the bases loaded and 2 outs. All 3 of those runners scored, and the Royals added on 8 more in the last 3 frames against the bullpen. Ryan Howard had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and Domonic Brown blasted his first home run in the second inning. This week 4 HomeSiders started major league games and all were beaten. Jay Happ will make his season debut this afternoon against Boston.
In Tampa, the Rays shut out the Indians, 4-0. Michael Bourn had a single and a double for the Tribe.
Lets start our trip around the country in Buffalo, where the Bisons edged Rochester, 3-2. Anthony Gose had 2 hits and scored 2 runs, and is off to a 5 for 8 (.625) start in 2 games............In Memphis, the Redbirds and Oklahoma City split a pair. Memphis won the opener, 9-0, and Oklahoma City came back for an 8-7 win and a split. In Manchester, the Fightin' Phils got their first win of the year, behind a very strong effort from Jesse Biddle. Jesse threw 6 solid frames, yielding just 1 run on 2 hits and a walk, striking out 6. Jay Johnson and Hector Neris finished it off, with Neris notching 5 Ks in 2 innings. Anthony Hewitt had 2 doubles and a walk, scored a run and knocked in 3, Cameron Rupp and Tyler Hensen had 3 hits each, and Jim Murphy chipped in with 2 hits in Reading's 6-1 win. Sebastian Valle and Derrick Mitchell each got their first hit of the season..............In Clearwater, the Threshers dropped their home opener, 2-0 in 10 innings to Dunedin, getting just 3 hits in the process. Kyrell Hudson and Aaron Altherr (double) had a hit each for the Threshers, and Altherr also picked up an assist, throwing a runner out at second. Lehigh Valley managed just 4 hits, Darin Ruf and Leandro Castro getting 1 each.
In Lakewood, the BlueClaws have dropped their first 2 games. Chace Numata had 3 hits Friday, Roman Quinn added 2 more and Mitch Walding has played well, going 3 for 5 and knocking in 2 runs. Another guy who has made an impression on me is Art Charles, who has made about 4 great plays at first base in 2 games!

Darin Ruf (1 for 4) had the only RBI for Lehigh Valley, and Leandro Castro was 0 for 4 in his AAA debut...............In Manchester, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats held Reading to just 3 hits en route to a 9-0 win. Reading tops LV
In Allentown on Tuesday, the Reading Fightin' Phils beat Lehigh Valley, 6-4. The IronPigs scored first on an RBI single by Darin Ruf in the 1st inning. It stayed that way until the 4th when Sebastian Valle doubled home 2 runs for the Fightins, then scored on the front end of a double steal while Derrick Mitchell was being thrown out at second. Then, in the 8th Zack Collier scored a run, and Cameron Rupp knocked in another one to give Reading a 6-1 advantage. Steve Susdorf had an RBI single in the 3-run 9th inning rally by the Pigs that ended with the tying run at bat.
Reading will open their season Thursday night in Manchester, New Hampshire against the Fisher Cats. David Buchanan will get the nod for the Fightin' Phils. Reading may get to face Tyson Brummett, who the Blue Jays have moved back into a starter's role with New Hampshire.
Lehigh Valley opens at home on the same night, Tyler Cloyd will face Syracuse in Allentown.

Yu know what: No no-no!
On Tuesday in Toronto, Michael Bourn- who struggled through spring training-made his debut for Cleveland with a 2 for 5 game and scored a run as the Indians topped the Jays, 4-1 in the opener for both teams.
The big story of the night was Texas' Yu Darvish coming within 1 out of a perfect game against Houston, before Jose Altuve hit a ground ball throught his legs into center field to end the bid. The Rangers won the game, 7-0- evening both team's records at 1-1.

Worley, Hamels both lose openers
The 2013 season has started with 12 HomeSiders in the major leagues. Besides our 6 Phillies ( Hamels, Kendrick, Bastardo, Howard, Brown and Galvis) Jay Happ will start the year in Toronto, Gavin Gloyd will return to the White Sox, Michael Bourn and Lou Marson are with the Indians, Alfredo Simon is with the Reds, and Vance Worley will take the hill for the Twins.
I have not mentioned that Jason Donald has been designated for assignment by Cincinnati, which was a late decision after he was in camp until the end.
On Monday in Minnesota, Vance Worley made his debut for the Twins, facing Justin Verlander and Tigers. Worley was good, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and just 1 walk, striking out 3, but was the losing pitcher in a 4-2 Detroit win. It was the first win for Verlander on opening day in 8 tries.
In Atalnta, Cole Hamels was not his usual effective self, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk in just 5 innings in the Phillies' 7-5 loss to the Braves. Cole pitches were high in the strike zone for much of the evening and the Braves tagged him for 3 home runs. Ryan Howard was 0 for 5, but drove in a run, and Domonic Brown had a single in his first at bat, and also had a walk in 4 plate appearances. 26 of the 30 teams have played their openers, and the last 4 go at it today.

Lehigh Valley & Reading rosters
Welcome, my fellow HomeSiders, to another baseball season.
The Phillies have optioned Mike Stutes back to Lehigh Valley. There are 9 former BlueClaws on the Ironpigs roster to open the season. 3 in the bullpen- Stutes, Justin De Fratus and Jake Diekman, 3 in the rotation- Tyler Cloyd, Jonathan Pettibone, and BJ Rosenberg, and 3 outfielders- Leandro Castro, Darin Ruf, and Steve Susdorf.
As is usually the case, Reading has the most- 16 by my count. Starters Jesse Biddle, Austin Wright, David Buchanan, and Brody Colvin comprise 4/5th of the rotation and relievers Tyler Knigge, Jay Johnson, Hector Neris and Juan Sosa will start in the pen for the Fightin' Phils. They actually changed the name to that- the Reading Fightin' Phils!! Cameron Rupp and Sebastian Valle will share the catching. Troy Hanzawa, Edgar Duran and Jim Murphy will play the infield, and Zack Collier, Anthony Hewitt, and Derrick Mitchell will patrol the outfield grounds in Baseballtown.
The name missing here is Mike Spidale. Released or retired, I am not sure yet.
The Clearwater Threshers have not posted a roster, yet, but they are always last.
Today @ 4:00, Vance Worley will make his debut for the Twins against the Tigers, and @ 7:00- Cole Hamels will face the Braves.
