Kendrick effort wasted

In Philadelphia, Kyle Kendrick threw 7 shut out innings against the Braves, only to see Antonio Bastardo allow 5 runs in the 8th.  Bastardo walked 3, including 1 with the bases loaded, before allowing a grand slam home run to Brian McCann.  Bastardo's ERA has now ballooned to 5.34.  The Phillies managed just 5 hits in the 5-0 loss, 2 of the hits by Ryan Howard, as he played his first major league game since last October.  Carlos Ruiz (.349) was 0 for 4 for Philadelphia, and Michael Bourn (.305) was 0 for 3, with 2 walks and a run scored for Atlanta.

In Detroit, Quintin Berry (.294) was 1 for 4, a 2-run triple to get the Tigers off to a 2-0 lead on their way to a 4-2 win over Kansas City......In Houston, Jay Happ (6-9) pitched well for 5 innings, but in the end allowed 7 runs on 9 hits and 1 walk in 6.1 innings against Milwaukee, who beat the Astros, 7-1......In Phoenix, Mike Zagurski threw a scoreless inning against the Dodgers, recording his 2nd hold as the D-Backs won over LA, 5-3.

return of Ryno

The Phillies have activated Ryan Howard for tonight's game with Atlanta, and the Indians have returned Jason Donald to Columbus.

Claws, Threshers, Pigs all win

In Allentown, with the IronPigs playing as the visiting team, Lehigh Valley took a 7-2 win from the Yankees. Steve Susdorf (.300) had 3 hits and scored a run,  Ryan Howard had 2 hits, 2 walks and an RBI and Mike Spidale (.261) also had 2 hits and scored a run for the Pigs.  Tyson Brummett had a 1-2-3 inning in relief.

In Lakeland, the Clearwater Threshers (9-6)  took first place in the Florida State League's North Division with a 4-2 win over the Flying Tigers. Jesse Biddle registered his 5th win, going 6.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, and lowered his ERA to 3.23.  As his confidence grows, this guy gets better and better. If he stays healthy,  he looks like the real deal to me.  And he won't be 21 years old until October.  Cameron Rupp had 2 hits, a walk, and an RBI to lead the shark attack, and Hector Neris (5 outs, 8th hold) and Tyler Knigge (1-2-3 9th, 9th save).  I don't remember the last time Knigge (0.63) gave up a run, but I think Clinton was president!  The actual number are 42.2 innings worked this year, only 36 baserunners (25 hits, 11 walks) and 3 runs allowed.  I reiterate: Promotion time!!

In Charleston, the BlueClaws collected 15 hits, 3 each for Guantlett Eldemire (.221, triple, 2 runs, RBI), Kelly Dugan (.270, 2 runs) and Maikel Franco (.236, double, 2 runs, 2 RBI) , scoring early (4 in the 1st) and late (3 in the 9th) to take an 11-4 win from the Power. Chris Duffy (.373) had a hit and 2 walks, 1 day after having his hitting streak ended at 19, and Aaron Altherr extended his streak to 11 straight.  The BlueClaws (9-6) trail Hickory by 2 games and will play the Crawdads 4 games when they return home Tuesday.

In Altoona, Reading rallied for 2 runs in the 8th inning to tie their game with the Curve, only to lose it in the bottom half of the inning, 4-2.  Darin Ruf and Leandro Castro had 2 hits each, and scored the 2 runs during the R-Phils rally.  Trevor May allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks (still too many) over just 5 innings, and received no decision.

In Lancaster, Domingo Santana (.297) had a 2-out, 2-run pinch hit single in the bottom of the 9th inning to draw the JetHawks within a run of Visalia, but the rallied ended there and the Rawhide escaped with an 8-7 nail biter............In Albuquerque, Will Savage started for the Isotopes, and went 5.2 innings against Round Rock, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on 5 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5 in Albuquerque's 10-9 come from behind win.........In Spingdale, Jonathan Singleton had a double, a triple, a walk, and 2 RBI, and Jonathan Villar belted a 3-run home run, his 9th, as the Corpus Christi Hooks romped over the Naturals, 10-2.

In case you haven't noticed, Greg Golson is on the 7-day DL with Charlotte, I am unaware of the actual injury and will keep looking.

Mets take rubber game from Phils

In New York Thursday night, the Mets rallied for 2 in the bottom of the 9th to steal a 6-5 win from the Phillies. Carlos Ruiz (.355) was 1 for 4, and Cole Hamels went 7 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk, striking out 7, and leaving the game with a 5-4 lead.  Antonio Bastardo recorded his 16th hold with a perfect 8th inning, before Papelbon blew the game in the 9th.

In Detroit, Quintin Berry had a pinch hit walk, and then scored what proved to be the winning run, as the Tigers rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to take a 7-3 decision from the Twins.

Phillies honor Duffy

The Phillies have named Chris Duffy minor league player of the month for June.  Duffy was phenomenal, hitting .420 for the month and reaching base in all 23 games in which he played.  Former Claw Lisalberto Bonila was named minor league pitcher of the month.  Since his promotion from Clearwater, Bonilla has struck of 29 of the 64 hitters he has faced while pitching for Reading.

On your own today

I am running out the door for work, so you are on your own for Wednesday's action, but 3 things jumped out at me when I looked quickly just now.

1. Michael Bourn (.310) had a single, a double and a triple and scored the lone run for the Braves in their loss.  Don't forget to vote for Bourn for the All-Star game!!

2. Lou Marson had 2 more hits, raising his average to .295 for the Indians.

3. The Colorado Rockies have optioned Josh Outman to AA-Tulsa.

Also, a correction from the other day, Bob Stumpo in is Reading, not Lehigh Valley as previously stated.

Ryno goes deep for Pigs, Claws win again

Ryan Howard was 2 for 3 for Lehigh Valley Tuesday night, including a home run and 4 RBI to help the IronPigs to a 6-5 win the Empire State Yankees.  Cody Overbeck had 2 doubles and an RBI, Tuffy Gosewisch had an RBI double, Mike Spidale had a hit and scored a run in his only at bat, and Jeremy Barnes made his AAA debut, coming in as a pinch runner and scoring a run.  Tyler Cloyd (2.15 ERA)  started for the Pigs and went 7 good innings, allowing just 3 runs, 2 earned on just 5 hits and 1 walk, receiving no decision.

In a related note, Bob Stumpo has been transferred from Lakewood to Lehigh Valley, and Colton Murray has been promoted  from Lakewood to Clearwater.

In Lakewood, the BlueClaws wrapped up thier longest home stand of the year with an exciting 8-3 win over Hagerstown.  Colin Kleven was fantastic, throwing 7 solid innings, allowing  just 1 earned run (3 overall) on 6 hits, NO walks, and a season high 11 strike outs.  Unfortunately, he left the game in a 3-3 tie and receives no decision.  Brock Stassi had 2 more hits, including an inside the park, 3-run home run to cap the 5-run 8th inning rally.  Stassi (.333 since joining Lakewood) had 5 RBI in the game, and has driven in 9 runs in his first 11 games with the Claws. Kelly Dugan, Aaron Altherr, and Maikel Franco also had 2 hits each for Lakewood, who has scored 53 runs in their last 6 games!  Chris Duffy had a hit to extend his hitting streak to 19 games.

In Reading, the R-Phils managed just 3 hits in a 14-2 loss to New Hampshire.  Kevin Howard had a hit and 2 RBI for the Fisher Cats.  Catcher Steve Lerud and first baseman Darin Ruf shared the pitching duties in the 9th inning!!

In Clearwater, Zack Collier (.312) had the big hit, a  2-RBI single during the Thresher's 4-run 7th inning rally to take a 5-1 win over Brevard County.  Brody Colvin started and 6 solid innings, allowing just 1 run on 6 hits and 3 walks, striking out 6, and Mike Nesseth picked up the win, his first for Clearwater, with 3 perfect innings of relief.

In Nashville, the Iowa Cubs beat the Sounds, 3-2.  Adrian Cardenas (.317) had a double and 2 walks for the Cubs..............In Sacramento, Michael Taylor (.302) had a single and a double and scored a run for the River Cats, who lost to Colorado Springs, 7-4............In Birmingham, the Barons defeated the Stars, 5-1.  Darren Byrd retired the only 2 hitters he faced for Huntsville.......In Corpus Christi, Jarred Cosart (4-5) started for the Hooks, and gave up 4 runs on 8 hits, NO walks, striking out 4 in just 4.2 innings of work in the Hooks' 5-1 loss to Tulsa.......In Modesto, Domingo Santana (.294) had a big 2-RBI hit in the top of the 9th inning to tie the game for Lancaster, but the JetHawks dropped the game in 11 innings, 7-6.
