Ryan Howard's 2-run single in the top of the 9th inning drove in 2 runs to give the Phillies a 7-6 win over Toronto and spoil the Canada Day festivities for 45,000+ Friday afternoon. It was the second hit of the game for Ryno, who now has 66 RBI. In a see-saw game that went back and forth from the fisrt inning on, Philadelphia improves to a major league best 52-31 on the year.
Kyle Kendrick made the start for the Phillies and went 7 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk, striking out 5 and keeping the Phillies in striking distance. Antonio Bastardo (0.90), who has inherited the closer's job through default, tossed a 1-2-3 9th inning after Howard's big hit to notch his 4th save. Domonic Brown had a double, a walk, stole a base and scored a run, and Carlos Ruiz picked up an RBI hit. Roy Halladay will start on Saturday in his first game in Toronto since he became a Phillie.
In Houston, the Boston Red Sox rallied for 6 runs in the 7th inning to take a 7-5 victory from the woeful Astros. Sergio Escalona had a rare hiccup in his good season, facing 2 hitters, plunking 1 and allowing a hit to the other. Both runners scored and Escalona (1-1, 3.46) was tagged with the his 1st loss of the year. Michael Bourn (.289) had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and stole his major league leading 35th base for the Astros.
In Reading, Tuffy Gosewisch belted a 3-run homer in the 6th inning to give the R-Phils a 6-4 lead in an eventual 7-5 win. It was the 8th dinger of the year for Tuffy, who now has 39 RBI. Mike Spidale (.323) had 3 hits for Reading, and Matt Rizzotti and Steve Susdorf added 2 hits each. B.J. Rosenberg started and went 5 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, and Mike Cisco came on in the 6th, Cisco gave up a rare run (1.76 ERA) but Gosewisch home run gave him the win, his 5th straight this year. Jacob Diekman threw 2 impressive innings, striking out 4 of the 6 hitters he faced, before Justin Friend picked up his 3rd save for Reading (after 19 for Clearwater).

Hamels hit by line drive
Cole Hamels was hit in his right hand by Adrian Gonzalez' line drive in the 4th inning Thursday, and although x-rays have shown there is no break, Cole may miss his next start due to swelling of his hand. Cole was hit with such force in the heel of his glove that it was knocked off his hand, yet he made the play to get Gonzalez at first base. He also completed the inning, but was removed after that for precautionary reasons. He allowed just 2 hits in his 4 innings of work in the Sox' 5-2 win. Andrew Carpenter, who was called up prior to the game, made his season debut and threw 2 innings. He gave up back-to-back home runs in the 7th to Jason Varitek and Dustin Pedroia, and struck out 4, and Scott Mathieson threw a scoreless 9th, even though he allowed a walk and 2 hits. The Phillies' 2 runs came on Ryan Howard's 17th home run in the bottom of the 9th. Ryan now has 64 RBI on the year.
In Houston, Michael Bourn had a double and scored a run for the Astros in their 7-0 win over Texas, and in Baltimore, Alfredo Simon came off the DL for the Orioles and pitched 3.1 effective innings of relief (1 run, 3 hits, 1 walk, 3 Ks) against the Cardinals in St Louis' 9-6 victory.
Former Phillie J.C. Romero was signed by Washington, and assigned to AAA Syracuse.
Congratulations to IronPigs Michael Schwimer and Mike Zagurski, the only 2 HomeSiders named to play in the AAA All-Star game in Salt Lake City.
Speaking of the IronPigs, Tyson Brummett made his 2nd start and 3rd appaerance for Lehigh Valley Thursday, tossing 6 good innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, NO walks, and 5 Ks, and was charged with the loss in Buffalo's 4-2 win. John Mayberry hit his 3rd home run for Lehigh Valley............In Reading, Joe Esposito made his 2nd start since his promotion from Clearwater, and allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits as Richmond topped Reading, 5-2. Jeremy Barnes had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and red hot Jonathan Singleton added 2 more hits. Since leaving the outfield and retuning to first base, Singleton has been unstoppable, and is hitting over .500 since the move.
In Las Vegas, Kyle Drabek had his first good outing in quite some time, pitching 6 innings for the 51s in their 2-1 win over Colorado Springs. Drabek allowed just 1 run on 6 hits and did not walk anyone (which has been a big part of the problem lately), throwing 99 pitches. Kevin Howard (.339) was 1 for 4 for Vegas.

Carrasco, Worley impress again
The maturation of Vance Worley, Mike Stutes and Antonio Bastardo continues at a pace that no one could have foreseen earlier this year. Last night in Philadelphia, the trio combined to hold Boston to just 1 run on 5 hits, as the Phillies won again, 2-1. Worley recorded his 3rd win of the season, throwing 7 strong innings at the Sox to improve to 3-1, 2.57 on the year. Stutes (2.81) picked up his 5th hold, and Bastardo (0.93) his 3rd save, each throwing a 1-2-3 inning to finish off Worley's effort. As strong as that Boston line up is, to me this is an impressive performance by the 3 former Claws, especially when you consider that Boston pitcher John Lackey drove in the only run for the Red Sox!
Earlier, in Phoenix, Carlos Carrasco continued his impressive month, winning for the 7th time in his last 9 starts in a 6-2 Indians win over the Diamondbacks. Carrasco went 7 innings, and gave up 2 runs on just 4 hits (2 solo home runs accounting for the Arizona runs), NO walks and 7 Ks. Carlos showed once again that he is becoming unflappable, working out of trouble and picking up the big outs every time he needed them, including his last out, which was a strike out of pinch hitter Willy Mo Pena with 2 fastballs on the outside edge, and a killer slider that broke away from Pena, with the score 4-2, and a runner at second base. He also successfully sacrificed twice in his 4 at bats! Carrasco is now 8-4, 3.57 on the year, and will probably pitch Monday night in Cleveland against the Yankees. Lou Marson picked up 2 hits and a walk, and scored a run for Cleveland, and looks like he is finding his stroke at the plate.
The 2 wins make 49 on the year for former BlueClaws in the majors.

In Denver, Gavin Floyd threw 7 good innings for the White Sox, giving up just 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks against the Rockies. Floyd received no decision as Colorado took a 3-2 decision in the 13th inning.......In Houston, Michael Bourn (.285) had a single and a triple, scored twice and stole his 34th base of the year for the Astros, but Houston lost to the Rangers, 7-3.

quick weekend review
In Philadelphia Sunday, Josh Outman had the misfortune of matching up with Roy Halladay. Josh did well, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks (4 Ks) over 6 innings before coming out for a pinch hitter in the 7th. The Athletics could do nothing with Halladay, and Outman suffered his 2nd loss of the year as the Phillies won, 3-1.
In Houston, Jay Happ took his lumps from the Rays, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits in 5 innings in Tampa's 14-10 win over the Astros. Jay has hit a rough spot the last few starts, but in all honesty, his team offers very little help. Michael Bourn had an RBI hit, stole his league leading 33rd base, and scored a run for the Astros, and Sergio Escalona had to come on the get the final out of the game, which he did with a strike out of the only hitter he faced.
