Ryno's knock wins it for Phils

Ryan Howard's 2-run single in the top of the 9th inning drove in 2 runs to give the Phillies a 7-6 win over Toronto and spoil the Canada Day festivities for 45,000+ Friday afternoon. It was the second hit of the game for Ryno, who now has 66 RBI. In a see-saw game that went back and forth from the fisrt inning on, Philadelphia improves to a major league best 52-31 on the year.

Kyle Kendrick made the start for the Phillies and went 7 innings, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk, striking out 5 and keeping the Phillies in striking distance. Antonio Bastardo (0.90), who has inherited the closer's job through default, tossed a 1-2-3 9th inning after Howard's big hit to notch his 4th save. Domonic Brown had a double, a walk, stole a base and scored a run, and Carlos Ruiz picked up an RBI hit. Roy Halladay will start on Saturday in his first game in Toronto since he became a Phillie.

In Houston, the Boston Red Sox rallied for 6 runs in the 7th inning to take a 7-5 victory from the woeful Astros. Sergio Escalona had a rare hiccup in his good season, facing 2 hitters, plunking 1 and allowing a hit to the other. Both runners scored and Escalona (1-1, 3.46) was tagged with the his 1st loss of the year. Michael Bourn (.289) had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and stole his major league leading 35th base for the Astros.

In Reading, Tuffy Gosewisch belted a 3-run homer in the 6th inning to give the R-Phils a 6-4 lead in an eventual 7-5 win. It was the 8th dinger of the year for Tuffy, who now has 39 RBI. Mike Spidale (.323) had 3 hits for Reading, and Matt Rizzotti and Steve Susdorf added 2 hits each. B.J. Rosenberg started and went 5 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, and Mike Cisco came on in the 6th, Cisco gave up a rare run (1.76 ERA) but Gosewisch home run gave him the win, his 5th straight this year. Jacob Diekman threw 2 impressive innings, striking out 4 of the 6 hitters he faced, before Justin Friend picked up his 3rd save for Reading (after 19 for Clearwater).



In Charlotte, Joe Bisenius pitched a strong game for the Knights, allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in a 7-2 win over Durham. "Bis" is 2-0, 1.86 in 4 starts for Charlotte..........In Jackson, the Generals beat Will Savage and the Lookouts, 7-4. Savage went 6 innings for Chattanooga, allowing all 7 runs, 6 earned, on 11 hits and slipped to 8-3, 4.02 for the Dodger's affiliate..............In Portland, Travis d'Arnaud (.290) had 2 hits to help New Hampshire to a 6-2 win over the Sea Dogs........In Las Vegas, Kevin Howard (.367) had 3 hits, drove in 2 runs and scored another in the 51s' 9-7 win over Colorado Springs...............In Toledo, the Mud Hens beat Columbus, 3-1. Jason Donald had 2 of Columbus' 5 hits, and is hitting .307 for the Clippers.
