Hamels hit by line drive

Cole Hamels was hit in his right hand by Adrian Gonzalez' line drive in the 4th inning Thursday, and although x-rays have shown there is no break, Cole may miss his next start due to swelling of his hand. Cole was hit with such force in the heel of his glove that it was knocked off his hand, yet he made the play to get Gonzalez at first base. He also completed the inning, but was removed after that for precautionary reasons. He allowed just 2 hits in his 4 innings of work in the Sox' 5-2 win. Andrew Carpenter, who was called up prior to the game, made his season debut and threw 2 innings. He gave up back-to-back home runs in the 7th to Jason Varitek and Dustin Pedroia, and struck out 4, and Scott Mathieson threw a scoreless 9th, even though he allowed a walk and 2 hits. The Phillies' 2 runs came on Ryan Howard's 17th home run in the bottom of the 9th. Ryan now has 64 RBI on the year.

In Houston, Michael Bourn had a double and scored a run for the Astros in their 7-0 win over Texas, and in Baltimore, Alfredo Simon came off the DL for the Orioles and pitched 3.1 effective innings of relief (1 run, 3 hits, 1 walk, 3 Ks) against the Cardinals in St Louis' 9-6 victory.

Former Phillie J.C. Romero was signed by Washington, and assigned to AAA Syracuse.

Congratulations to IronPigs Michael Schwimer and Mike Zagurski, the only 2 HomeSiders named to play in the AAA All-Star game in Salt Lake City.

Speaking of the IronPigs, Tyson Brummett made his 2nd start and 3rd appaerance for Lehigh Valley Thursday, tossing 6 good innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, NO walks, and 5 Ks, and was charged with the loss in Buffalo's 4-2 win. John Mayberry hit his 3rd home run for Lehigh Valley............In Reading, Joe Esposito made his 2nd start since his promotion from Clearwater, and allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits as Richmond topped Reading, 5-2. Jordan Ellis, Joe Savery and Josh Zeid combined for 4 innings of scoreless relief. Tuffy Gosewisch (.277) had 2 hits and scored a run for the R-Phils...........In Clearwater, Brody Colvin recorded his 1st win of the season as the Threshers defeated Brevard County, 5-4. Jeremy Barnes had 2 hits and 2 RBI, and red hot Jonathan Singleton added 2 more hits. Since leaving the outfield and retuning to first base, Singleton has been unstoppable, and is hitting over .500 since the move.

In Las Vegas, Kyle Drabek had his first good outing in quite some time, pitching 6 innings for the 51s in their 2-1 win over Colorado Springs. Drabek allowed just 1 run on 6 hits and did not walk anyone (which has been a big part of the problem lately), throwing 99 pitches. Kevin Howard (.339) was 1 for 4 for Vegas.

In Charlotte, R.J. Swindel threw a scoreless inning for Durham in the 2nd game of the doubleheader (1 hit, 1 walk, 1 K), as the Bulls won 7-4 to gain a split...........In Omaha, the Storm Chasers won a wild one 18-13 over Albuquerque. Robinson Tejeda recorded 4 outs, 3 by strike outs, and gave up no hits, no runs (2 walks) for Omaha................In Round Rock, Zack Segovia allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits in 1.2 innings for Nashville in the Express' 6-5 win over the Sounds.................In Portland, Anthony Gose hit his 3rd home run of the year for the Fisher Cats, but New Hampshire dropped a 10-6 decision to the Sea Dogs.................In Huntsville, Jesus Sanchez pitched 4 innings for the Stars in the 2nd game of their doubleheader with Mississippi, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks and receiving no decision in the Stars' 7-2 win.............In Kodak, Quintin Berry (.281) came off the DL and had a pinch hit single and stole his 17th base for Carolina in the Mudcats' 7-5 loss to the Smokies........In Tulsa, Jonathan Villar had 2 hits, stole a base (#5) and scored a run for Corpus Christi in the Hooks' 4-3 loss to the Drillers. Villar had stolen 20 bases for Lancaster prior to his promotion.
