Pigs win; Reading edges closer

In Allentown, the IronPigs scored in the bottom of the 10th to take a 4-3 win over the Columbus Clippers. Jason Donald (.331) had a hit, 2 walks, and scored a run for the Clippers. Scott Mathieson started for Lehigh Valley, and threw 4.1 innings, charged with 1 run, 2 hits, 3 walks, 8 Ks. He threw 87 total pitches, 55 strikes. Joe Savery gave up 2 runs on 1 hit and 2 walks in his inning, Mike Zagurski got 4 outs, 3 strike outs, and Mike Schwimer went the final 2.1, striking out 4 to improve to 6-1, 1.75 for Lehigh Valley.

In Reading, RBI hits by Steve Susdorf and Derrick Mitchell gave the R-Phils an early 3-0 lead, and strong pitching by Austin Hyatt (9-5; 6 IP, 1 run, 4 hits, 3 walks, 6 Ks) led Reading to a 3-2 victory. The win makes Reading 53-47, and pulls them to 2.5 games behind New Hampshire, who dropped a 3-2 decision at home to Portland.............In Clearwater, Darin Ruf (.310) hit his 9th home run of the season, and Jiwan James had 2 hits and 2 walks, scored 2 runs and drove in 2 runs, and stole his 20th base. Cesar Hernandez and Troy Hanzawa also had 2 hits each as the Threshers defeated Fort Myers, 8-6. Jarred Cosart won his 8th game of the year, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. Eric Pettis allowed 2 runs in 2 innings of work, and Juan Sosa threw 2 scoreless frames to notch his first save for the Threshers. Juan had saved 10 with Lakewood before his promotion.

In Sacramento, the River Cats took a 5-4 win to gain a split of their doubleheader with Reno, with Adrian Cardenas (.308) going 3 for 4, including a double and a triple with 2 runs scored. "A.C." was 0 for 3 in the opener. Michael Taylor (.282) had a hit and 2 walks, with an RBI on the day.........In Scranton, Greg Golson (.287) had a triple, a walk, an RBI and scored 2 runs to help the Yankees to a 5-2 win over Syracuse........Jonathan Villar hit his 6th home run for Corpus Christi, also walking twice and stealing a base in the Hooks' 9-5 loss at Frisco. For Jonathan, it was his 3rd home run in the last 6 games, and the steal was his 27th of the year, and 7th since his promotion. Although only hitting .216 since his call-up to AA, Villar appears to be getting more consistent. Let's hope I didn't just jinx him................In Kodak, Quintin Berry (.283) was 2 for 4 for the Mudcats in the Smokies' 6-2 win.............In Huntsville, Darren Byrd (3.77) had a disaster for the Stars. Darren came into the game in the 8th inning with 2 on and 1 out, and promptly allowed a hit and 2 walks, both inherited runners scored and 2 of his 3 runners scored, as Chattanooga scored 4 in the 8th and another in the 9th for a 5-4 win over the Stars.

For long-time Phillies minor league watchers; Jorge Padilla is hitting .350 in 12 games at AAA New Orleans. Padilla will turn 32 in August.
