Monday's highlights

In Wrigley Field Monday night, Roy Halladay was overcome by the heat and the Cubs, Halladay only making it through 1 batter in the 5th inning and it was evident he was laboring. Andrew Carpenter came on and threw 2 emergency innings (2 runs, 3 hits, 2 walks, 1 K), and Carlos Ruiz had a hit and a walk, as Chicago took the opener of the series, 6-1.

In Minnesota, Lou Marson belted a double and his first home run of the season, as the Indians beat the Twins, 6-3, to give Cleveland a sweep of the day/night doubleheader.

2 notes jump out at me today, 1-R.J. Swidel was released by the Rays (from Durham) and 2- D'Arby Myers was placed on the DL by the Threshers.

Alan Schoenberger has been promoted to Clearwater, and was in the line up Monday night (0 for 4), in the Thresher's 19-4 loss in St Lucie. Jeremy Barnes had a 2-hit game, Darin Ruf hit his 8th home run of the year, and the best thing I can say about the pitching was Brian Gump threw a scoreless 8th inning. That Gump is a good guy to have!!

Another good guy to have this year is Derrick Mitchell. "Mitch" (.283) had 3 more hits in Manchester last night, and is tied for the team lead with 58 RBI. The Reading Phillies edged the Fisher Cats, 3-2, and pull to within 3.5 games of first place behind the great starting pitching of Austin Hyatt. Hyatt (8-5, 4.23) went a solid 7, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks, striking out 10 along the way. Josh Zeid picked up his 2nd save with a scoreless 9th, and Freddy Galvis had 2 doubles, and scored 2 runs. For New Hampshire, Travis d'Arnaud (.330) had 2 more hits, driving in both runs, and Anthony Gose had 2 hits and stole 2 bases (total of 45).

In Corpus Christi, Jonathan Villar had 2 hits, including his 4th home run for the Hooks, drove in 2 runs and scored 2, but the Hooks lost to Midland, 15-8...........In Montgomery, the Huntsville Stars beat the Biscuits, 6-2. Both Montgomery runs were scored against Darren Byrd in his inning of work...........In Salt Lake City, Michael Taylor had an RBI-hit and scored a run and Adrian Cardenas (.308) had 2 doubles, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored as the Sacramento River Cats beat the Bees, 14-3.

Finally, Scott Mathieson made the start for the IronPigs and lasted just 2.2 innings, and giving up 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks, absorbing the loss in Pawtucket's 4-1 victory. Mike Zagurski threw a scoreless inning for Lehigh Valley.
