Jason Jaramillo, making just his second start of the year Sunday, had 2 hits including a 3-run double in the Pirates' 5 run 4th leading the Pirates to a 5-3 win and a sweep over the Reds in Pittsburgh Sunday.
The news was not so good in Philadelphia , where Cole Hamels was outdueled by the Marlin's Nate Robertson in Florida's 2-0 win over the Phillies. Hamels (2-1, 3.86) threw a strong 8 innings, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits, NO walks and 8 Ks as the Phillies dropped their first series of the season. Meanwhile, in Cleveland, the Indians completed the sweep of the White Sox, battering Gavin Floyd for 7 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks, the big righthander never recording an out in the 2nd inning. It was as tough an outing as Floyd has had in years, as Gavin fell to 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in 3 starts in 2010. OUCH!
In Lakewood Sunday, Nick Hernandez won his 3rd start in a row, tossing 8 shut out innings against Greensboro. The BlueClaws ace lefty gave up just 3 hits, NO walks, and struck out 9 to power the the Claws to the 10-0 victory. Two reserves, Stephen Batts and Alan Schoenberger had 3 hits and 3 runs scored each, Schoenberger driving in a run with each hit. In Richmond, Vance Worley won his first game, as the Reading Phillies gained a split of their 4-game set with Flying Squirrels with a 5-2 win. The news out of Reading is Quintin Berry has an undisclosed infection in his system and has been sent to Clearwater as the organization tries to diagnose and treat him. With Domonic Brown also out this week with a concussion, Reading finds itself a little short handed. Note to the Phillies: Steve Susdorf should be in Reading anyway...how about it?
Travis d'Arnaud had 2 more hits Saturday for Dunedin, raising his average to .425 with 10 RBI, and on Sunday in Reno, Michael Taylor had a hit and a walk and stole 3 bases, but Sacramento lost to the Aces, 10-7.
My calender shows Carlos Carrasco scheduled tonight in Louisville, Jarred Cosart for Lakewood, Austin Hyatt and Trevor May in the doubleheader for Clearwater, and Phillippe Aumont for Reading, as the R-Phils open a series in Harrisburg.
