Tuesday in Clearwater, the Phillies ripped the Rays, 10-1. Domonic Brown had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, knocked in a run and scored 2 more, Freddy Galvis had a single and a home run, driving in 3 and scoring 2, and Ryan Howard added 2 hits and scored twice. Derrick Mitchell got in the game late, replacing Brown. Michael Stutes and Colby Shreve each threw a scoreless frame, and Antonio Bastardo retired both hitters he faced................In Lakeland, Quintin Berry had a hit and a walk in his 2 at bats, stole a base and scored a run for Tigers in Detroit's 6-5 loss to the Braves........In Tampa, Jonathan Singleton had a walk and a strike out in his 2 at bats for Houston, as the Astros played the Yankees to a 4-4 draw.
Out in Goodyear, the Athletics edged Cleveland, 7-6. D'Arby Myers was used by Oakland as a defensive replacement late in the game. The Indians also resigned Matsuzaka, after releasing him earlier this week.............In Scottsdale, where the Giants got past the Padres, 4-2, Jesus Merchan was 0 for 3 for San Diego............In Mesa, Jason Donald was 0 for 2 and Alfredo Simon threw 2 innings (1 run 3 hits, 1 walk, 1 K) for the Reds in Cincinnati's 11-1 win over the Cubs.
Phillies play the Tigers today, final tune-up for both Cole Hamels and Justin Verlander before opening day next Monday.
