In Phoenix Friday, Tyler Cloyd made his season debut and pitched well, going 6.1 innings and allowing just 2 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks, striking out 4 in the Diamondbacks' 3-2 win over Philadelphia. Antonio Bastardo finshed the 7th inning, and allowed a hit which let the tying run score. Domonic Brown had an RBI hit, Carlos Ruiz had a hit and a walk, and Ryan Howard was 0 for 4. After the game the Phillies sent Cloyd back to Lehigh Valley and recalled Justin De Fratus, exchanging 1 HomeSider for another. With a few off days on the calander, the Phillies will go with 4 starters and will not need a fifth man until May 21..........In Detroit, Michael Bourn returned to the Cleveland line up, going 0 for 4 in the Tigers 10-4 win over the Indians..........In Cincinnati, Alfredo Simon picked up his 3rd win of the year with 2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up 2 hits and a walk, and striking out 2 in the Reds' 4-3 win over Milwaukee. It was the 14th win this year for HomeSiders in the major leagues.
In Corpus Christi, Domingo Santana belted 3 home runs, a franchise record, and drove in 5 runs to pace the Hooks to a 9-4 win over Frisco. He has now hit 4 home runs since his return from the DL with a hamstring pull. Santana (.264) now his 7 dingers and and 17 RBI for the Hooks..........In New Britain, Trevor May pitched a complete game (7 innings) 2-hit shut out, walking 1 and striking out 10 as the Rock Cats took a 6-0 win over the Sea Dogs to gain a split of their doubleheader. As usual, if Trevor does not walk hitters, he can be very effective..............In Louisville, Anthony Gose hit a 2-run home run, and also walked and stole a base (#5) for the Bisons, helping Buffalo to a 7-5 victory over the Bats.................In Reno, Omaha topped the Aces, 6-2, but Tuffy Gosewisch had 2 hits for Reno in a losing cause.
In Greensboro, Zack Taylor had 2 doubles and a home run- 1 of 4 long balls by Lakewood- to pace the BlueClaws to a 10-3 win over the Grasshoppers. Chace Numata, getting better and better as the games go by, belted a grand slam in the 3rd inning and the Claws were out front for good! Roman Quinn and Brian Pointer also homered, and Pointer stole his 13th base of the year. The win went to Geoff Broussard with 2 more shut out innings in relief. Broussard has been very good since coming to Lakewood, throwing over 7 innings in 3 appearances and not allowing an earned run yet..........In Clearwater, Gabriel Arias has really taken to the starting assignments, winning again by throwing 7 solid innings against Lakeland, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits and 1 walk, srtriking out 6 and pitching the Threshers to a 2-1 win. Gabe is 4-1, 1.25 on the year, and if not for Jesse Biddle, would have been my choice for pitcher of the month of April. Harold Martinez homered for the Threshers..........In Reading, Cameron Rupp had 3 hits, including his 4th home run of the year, but the Reading game was suspended by rain after 7 innings with the score tied at 3-3. They will try to finish it today before the regular game against Akron.
