Kendrick wins 5th, Brown hits 2 more!

In Philadelphia Wednesday night, Domonic Brown hit 2 more home runs (# 12 & 13), including the game winner, as the Phillies beat the Red Sox, 4-3.  That makes 5 home runs in the last 5 games for Domonic, the reigning NL player of the week!  Ryan Howard also went deep, his 7th, in support of Kyle Kendrick, who put in 6 solid innings (2 runs, 5 hits, 3 walks) to improve to 5-3, 3.27 this year.   It was win #22 for HomeSiders this year!!  Antonio Bastardo threw another scoreless frame, notching his 7th hold.

In Lakewood, the BlueClaws rallied from 3-0 down to take a 5-3 from Delmarva and sweep their series.  Art Charles had 2 hits, 2 walks, and 3 RBI to pace the attack, and Mitch Walding added 2 hits in Kevin Walter's Lakewood debut.  Walter went 4 innings, allowing a run on 4 hits, before yielding to Jeb Stefan, who won his first game of the season when Lakewood rallied.  The Claws will welcome West Virginia for a 4-game set, looking for a little revenge after dropping all 4 in Charleston last weekend............In Clearwater, Chris Seratella walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th , scoring Aaron Altherr and the Threshers walked off with a 5-4 win over the Manatees.  Kelly Dugan hit his 4th home run for Clearwater............In Bowie, Tommy Mendonca had 4 hits, Cameron Rupp had 3 hits and 3 RBI, and Edgar Duran and Jim Murphy added 2 hits each as the Reading Fightin Phils edged the BaySox, 6-5.

Marson to begin rehab

The Cleveland Indians have sent  Lou Marson  to AA-Akron for a rehab assignment. Akron is at home for 2 games (Wednesday & Thursday) before going on the road (to Reading) for the weekend.  Likely Marson will go from Akron to AAA-Columbus, who will return to Ohio Friday to open a series with Indianapolis.

Brown goes deep again; Singleton debuts with HR

Domonic Brown hit his 11 th home run of the year, a 9th inning insurance run, and the Phillies topped the Red Sox, 3-1.  It was RBI #30 for Dom, who is on pace to hit over 30 homers and knock in close to 100 runs in this, his first full season in the majors!!.............In Toronto, Anthony Gose had 2 hit for the Blue Jays, who dropped a 7-6, 10-inning contest to Atlanta.........In Cincinnati, the Reds beat the Indians again, 8-2.  Michael Bourn had 2 hits, a walk, and drove in a run for the Tribe.  Alfredo Simon threw the final 2 innings for the Reds, allowing an UNearned run on 2 hits, with 2 Ks.

In Davenport, Jonathan Singleton returned to action after serving a 50-game suspension, and homered in his 1st at bat, eevntually going 2 for 2, with a walk for the Quad City Bandits (Midwest League) in a rain-shortened, 7-5 victory over Kane County.  It should not be long before Singleton is moved up to AAA-Oklahoma City.  Speaking of the Red Hawks, Jarred Cosart won his 5th game of the year for OKC, throwing 5 innings in a 5-2 RedHawks win over Omaha.  Jarred allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and 7 walks.  The control has been an issue for Cosart, wh has had high pitch counts and as a result is having ha hard time getting deep into games...............In Lakewood, Willie Carmona had 3 hits, a walk, and an RBI as the BlueClaws defeated Delmarva, 5-4.  Another great effort from young Yoel Mecias, who threw 6 shut out innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk, striking out 8 in his longest career outing.  Mecias is now 3-2, 3.45 for the season and is pitching very well!  Delvi Francisco registered his 1st save with a scoreless 9th inning..........Reading wasted a nice outing from David Buchanan, who threw 6 innings against the Senators and gave up just 1 run on 4 hits and a walk, and took the hard luck loss in a 1-0 Harrisburg win...............In Las Vegas, Tuffy Gosewisch (.299) continued his hot hitting, picking up 2 more knocks, including a double, and scored a run for Reno in the Aces' 6-5 win over the 51s................In Sacramento, Michael Taylor (.328) had 2 hits and 3 RBI to help the River Cats beat Salt Lake, 9-4.

In Rochester, Vance Worley threw a complete game, 5-hit shut out at the IronPigs in his first game since being sent back to AAA.  Vance walked 4 and strruck out 4 in the Red Wing's 5-0 win.  BJ Rosenberg started and took the hard luck loss, going 4 innings and allowing just 1 run on 2 hits and 4 walks, striking out 5.   Troy Hanzawa and Leandro Castro had a hit each for Lehigh Valley...............In Harrisburg, Reading dropped a 3-1 decision despite a good performance by Hector Neris.  Neris went 5.2 innings against the Senators, allowing just 1 run on 6 hits and 3 walks, leaving the game in a 1-1 tie.  Juan Sosa gave up the game winning runs in the 8th inning on a 2-run home run by Senator's  catcher Jeff Howell...........In Lakewood, Miguel Nunez won his 5th game, tying him for the league lead, in a 6-1 win over Delmarva.   Nunez was brilliant, going 6 innings and allowing just 1 infield hit and 2 walks.  Willie Carmona and Carlos Tocci had 2 hits each, and each had a hit in the big, 4-run 8th inning which put the game away.  Jordan Guth, who has been great since moving to the pen, threw 3 scoreless innings, allowing just 1 walk on the way and recording the save.

Bucs call up Zagurski

The Pittsburgh Pirates have called up Mike Zagurski.  The Z-man has posted a 2.14 ERA for Indianapolis in 19 appearances and has earned the call-up.  Go, Mike!!

Zagurski  makes 15 HomeSiders active in the major leagues now.

what are we thinking here!!??

On Sunday in Washington, Cole Hamels threw 6 shut out innings before the wheels came off for the Phillies in a 5-run 7th and the Nationals defeated Philadelphia, 6-1.  In the end, Hamels (1-8!) was credited with 6.1 innings, and charged with 5 runs, 3 of which were earned, and just 6 hits and 1 walk.  Justin de Fratus finished the 7th, allowing a hit and a walk, and an  inherited runner to score.  The Phillies managed just 5 hits on the day, 1 each for Hamels and Freddy Galvis

The key moment in the game came with 1 out in the 7th and runners at second and third for the Nats, and Tyler Moore at bat.  I challange the strategy of pitching around Moore, who was hitting .147.  Go after him, don't pitch around him!!   If I am Charlie Manuel, I let Hamels go after Moore and Jhonatan Solano, hitting .154.  Cole has earned the right to pitch his way out of his own trouble.

In Boston, Michael Bourn (.314) had a hit and a walk, stole his 8th base, and scored a run for the Indians, but the Red Sox prevailed, 6-5.........In Allentown, Steve Susdorf (.325) had 3 hits, an RBI, and scored 2 runs to help[ the IronPigs beat Norfolk, 5-4.  Troy Hanzawa, who was moved up from Reading this weekend, had a big 2-RBI double for Lehigh Valley.  The IronPigs will go to Rochester Monday and face Vance Worley  in his first start since being optioned by the Twins.

In Springfield, D'Arby Myers (.287) had 2 hits and 3 RBI to provide the winning margin for Midland in a 5-2 Rock Hounds win over the Cardinals...................In Harrisburg, the Senators roughed up Jesse Biddle for 6 runs, 5 earned, in just 4 innings in an 8-2 Harrisburg victory.  Biddle (3-4, 3.15) did get 2 hits in the game, and is hitting .556!!.........In Viera,  Brock Stassi (2 singles, 2 RBI), Kyrell Hudson and Jonathan Roof all had 2 hits for Threshers, and Gabriel Arias went 6 good innings, recording his 6th win of the year in a 7-5 Clearwater win.  Arias (6-2, 2.47) has pitched very well since moving into the rotation..............In Colorado Springs, Greg Golson had a single and scored a run during the SkySox' 3-run 8th inning rally to help the Sox win an 8-6 contest over Fresno...........In Manchester, Trevor May won his 4th game of the year, still only going 5 innings in an 11-4 win for the Rock Cats.  Trevor threw 107 pitches, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, on 6 hits and 3 walks in the win over New Hampshire.

quiet Saturday on the HomeSide

In Washington Saturday, Jonathan Pettibone made another start and pitched pretty well.  "J-Bone"  went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs on 9 hits and 1 walk and left the game in a 2-2 tie.  He also had a double and scored a run.  Antonio Bastardo came on in the 7th, and got 2 outs, walking 2 on the way.  Domonic Brown (.262) had 2 more hits, including his 9th home run and 2 RBI.  After the game, BJ Rosenberg was optioned back to AAA.

In Charleston, the BlueClaws dropped their 4th straight, 2-1 to the Power.  Jonathan Musser pitched 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, NO walks and was tagged with the loss.  Geoff Broussard threw 2 perfect frames, lowering his ERA to a fantastic 0.63, and Delvi Francisco struck out the side in a 1-2-3 8th.  The Claws wrap up their trip today and return to the Jesery shore Monday night..............In Viera, the Threshers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Manatees.  Maikel Franco belted his 10th home run of the year for RBI #36.  Mario Hollands went the first 5.1 inings and gave up 2 runs, 1 earned, on 6 hits and 1 walk, striking out 8 and getting no decision...................In Harrisburg, Cameron Rupp and Tyler Henson had 2 hits each, and Tyson Gillies hit a home run as the Fightin Phils defeated the Senators, 5-1.  Mike Nesseth tossed 2 scoreless frames of relief..........In Allentown, Leandro Castro (.257) had 3 hits, stole his 12th base and knocked in a run to pace the IronPigs to a 4-2 win over Norfolk.

Stutes recalled

The Phillies have recalled Mike Stutes from AAA.  Mike's arrival in Philadelphia gives us 8 fromer Claws on the Phillies' pitching staff, an all time HomeSide high, 11 on their active roster, and 15 overall in the majors right now.

Stutes made his season debut with 2 perfect innings in Washington in the Phillies' 5-2 loss to the Nats.  Kyle Kendrick started and allowed 5 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks in just 5 innings, sustaining his 3rd loss of the season.  BJ Rosenberg also pitched, retiring 2 hitters and issuing 1 walk in the 8th inning.  Domonic Brown was 2 for 3, with a double and an RBI,  and a run scored,  and  Ryan Howard and Freddy Galvis had a hit each for Philadelphia..............In San Francisco, Josh Outman tossed a 1-2-3 inning for the Rockies in their 5-0 blanking of the Giants.

In Allentown, Cesar Hernandez and Josh Fields had 2 hits each, and Leandro Castro had a big 2-out, 2 RBI hit as the IronPigs shut out Norfolk, 4-0.  Jake Diekman recorded his 6th save with a 1-2-3 9th inning, striking out 2 of the 3 he faced.................In Harrisburg, the Senators held Reading to just 4 hits, 3 by Zack Collier, in a 9-2 Harriburg win.  Collier had a single, a double, and a home run for the Fightin Phils.  Austin Wright was hit hard, 9 runs on 10 hits and a walk in just 3.1 innings and his seaosn numbers are not pretty: 0-3, 15.43 on the year!  Yikes!!   Tyler Knigge and Jay Johnson combined to throw hitless, shut out ball the rest of the way...............In Viera, the Manatees edged the Threshers, 5-4.  Aaron Altherr had 2 more hits, raising his average to .327, and Logan Moore hit a home run for Clearwater.  Hoby Milner pitched well, going 6 innings and allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks (too many!), leaving with the game tied at 2-2.............In Charleston, the BlueClaws made 7 errors which led to Nick Hanson's first loss of the year in the Power's 9-2 victory.  Hanson allowed 9 hits and 8 runs, but only 2 of the runs were earned, in just 3.1 innings of work, as the Claws dropped their 3rd staright game after winning 9 of 13.  Roman Quinn (.251) had the only 2-hit game for Lakewood.

D'Arby Myers is still with Midland, and was 1 for 4 last night in Tulsa in the Rock Hounds' 3-2 win over the Drillers.  D'Arby is hitting .285 for the Athletic's affiliate.............In San Antonio, Mike Cisco tossed another scoreless inning for Arkansas in their 4-1 loss to the Missions.  Cisco has posted a 1.86 ERA in 17 appearances for the Travelers.  Adam Buschini had a hit and scored a run for the Missions..............In Iowa City, Jonathan Villar (.280) had 2 hits, including his 4th home run of the year for Oklahoma City in the Redhawks' 5-4 loss to the Cubs.  Josh Zeid retired both hitter he faced in the game for the Hawks..............In Colorado Springs, Greg Golson had a home run and knocked in 2 runs for the SkySox in their 13-8 win over Fresno..................In Tucson, Michael Taylor (.327) had 2 more hits for the River Cats, and the Cats topped the Padres, 5-2.

Happ transferred to 60-day DL

The Toronto Blue Jays have transferred Jay Happ from the 15-day DL, which he could have come off today, to the 60-day DL, telling us he will not be back anytime soon, if at all this year.  Jay was hit in the head with a line drive on May 7 in St. Petersburg.

some silver linings

Not a lot of good on Thursday, so I will quickly go through things and give you my silver linings.

The BlueClaws got just 4 hits in 12 innings after driving all night from Maryland to West Virginia, losing to the Power, 3-2.  Silver lining-  Art Charles 6th home run accounted for Lakewood's runs.

The Threshers blew a 2-run, 11th inning lead, and lost to the Stone Crabs, 9-8.  Silver linings- 4 hits for Kelly Dugan, who has come off the DL swinging, and hitting .333!  Maikel Franco hit his 9th home run, and at .294 with 35 RBI is having an All-Star season.

D'Arby Myers had not played for Midland since his 4-hit game.  I have seen no report of an injury, yet his name was not in the boxscore the last 2 days.  Silver lining-  Maybe the Athletics are thinking of moving him up and he is en route to AAA.  (This is pure "hopeful speculation"  on my part, I have no knowledge.  He could have a sprained ankle and is staying off it for a few days!)

Jarred Cosart sustained his 2nd loss of the year, pitching 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks, striking out 6 in Okalhoma City's 4-1 loss at Fresno.  Silver lining-  Cosart has a very good 2.55 ERA in the PCL (a hitter's league) and with the Astros sinking like a stone in the standings, a call-up could be sooner rather than later.

Hewitt's HR a walk off!

Wednesday in Reading, Anthony Hewitt hit a 2-out, 3-run home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Figthin Phils a 7-5 win over Altoona.  Cameron Rupp also hit a 3-run shot, his was in the 1st inning, and each of them had 2 hits. Jim Murphy also had a 2-hit game, and is hitting .317.  The win went to Brody Colvin (2-0) who allowed a run on a hit in 2 innings of relief........In Port Charlotte, Kelly Dugan (.312) and Cameron Perkins (.349) had 2 hits each and Perci Garner improved to 4-0, 2.32  as the Threshers edged the Stone Crabs, 3-2.......In Delmarva, Willie Carmona and Justin Dalles had 3 hits each for Lakewood, but the Shorebirds salvaged the final game of their series with an 8-6 win.  Roman Quinn had 2 more hits and stole 2 more bases.  Quinn is coming around, 12 for 34 (.353) the last 8 games, and has 22 steals now!!

In Corpus Christi, Domingo Santana had a 2-RBI double, 2 walks,  and scored 3 runs to help lead the Hooks to an 8-2 win over Northwest Arkansas................In Sacramento, Michael Taylor (.326) had 2 of the River Cats' 6 hits in their 2-0 loss to New Orleans..........In Round Rock, Lisalverto Bonilla made a start for thge Express, and went 3 innings (57 pitches as they build him up) allowing just 1 hit, 1 earned run, NO walks, and 2 Ks, and   he took the loss in a 6-2 Reno victory.

Worley optioned to AAA

Wednesday in Atlanta, Vance Worley was rocked for 8 runs on 10 hits and 2 walks in just 3.2 innings of work, as the Braves pounded the Twins, 8-3.  Worley (1-5, 7.21) was optioned to AAA-Rochester after the game, not surprising considering he has had just 3 quality starts out of 10 since a good spring training had him named opening day starter.  Hopefully, he can work out the problems and get back to the majors soon........In New York, the Reds scored 3 runs in the 9th inning to take a 7-4 game from the Mets and make a winner of Alfredo Simon.  Simon threw a scoreless 8th inning and was awarded his 4th win of the season when the Cincinnati bats scored the winning runs.......In Toronto, Jose Bautista hit a game tying home run in the bottom of the 9th, and then singled home the winning run in the 10th as the Jays topped Tampa, 4-3.  Anthony Gose had a double and scored a run for the Jays.......In Cleveland, Michael Bourn (.308) had an RBI hit and stole his 7th base, but the Indians fell to the Tigers, 11-7.........In Miami, the Phillies beat the Marlins, 3-0, behind the 3-hit complete game effort from Cliff Lee.  Ryan Howard (.263) had 2 hits, and Domonic Brown had an RBI triple and scored a run, and Freddy Galvis added an RBI hit in the 6th inning to give Lee some breathing room.

Cloyd wins

OK, so the Phillies made the right call, and Tyler Cloyd pitched a good game in Miami last night, going 7 innings and giving up just 2 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks to pick up the win in a 7-3 Phillies win.  Antonio Bastardo and BJ Rosenberg each threw an inning of relief.  It was the 3rd career win for Cloyd, his 1st this year and #20 for HomeSiders in the majors.  He becomes the 10th different HomeSider to win a major league game in 2013.  Ryan Howard (.256) celebrated his return to the line up with 3 hits and 3 RBI (also scored 2 runs), and Domonic Brown added a hit and 2 RBI to raise his season total to 23.

In Cleveland, the Tigers' Max Scherzer held the Indians to 3 hits, stopping the Indians winning streak in a 3-1 Detroit victory.  Michael Bourn (.314) had 2 of the 3 hits, stole his 6th base and scored the lone run for the Tribe.......In Denver, Josh Outman allowed a hit and a walk, and an inherited runner to score, but struck out 2 in his .2 innings of work in the Rockies' 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks.

In Reading, Jesse Biddle (3-3, 2.50) threw another outstanding game, pitching 7.2 innings of shut out ball, allowing just 3 hits and 4 walks, striking out 9 in a 3-0 win for the Fightin Phils.   Zack Collier had 2 hits, including his 3rd home run of the season. After a slow start,   Zack is 9 for 23 over the last 6 games............In Salisbury, the BlueClaws romped over the Shorebirds, pounding Delmarva 9-3.  Brian Pointer led the attack with 3 hits and 2 RBI, and Art Charles and Willie Carmona added 2 hits each as Lakewood won for the 9th time in the last 12 outings. Shane Watson was outstanding, throwing 5 shut out frames and allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks to record his 3rd win of the season.

In New Britain, Trevor May (3-2, 3.91) worked his way through 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits and 5 walks, striking out 6 in the Rock Cats' 9-3 win over Binghamton.........In Toledo, Quintin Berry had a hit, 2 walks, stole his 14th base and scored a run for the Mud Hens, but Sryacuse won the game, 7-5............In Sacramento, Michael Taylor (.319) had 3 hits and drove in a run for the River Cats, who lost a 4-3 game to New Orleans in 10 innings.

Cloyd gets call; Myers getting hotter

First things first, my speculation has been proved wrong, the Phillies will activate Tyler Cloyd for tonight's game in Miami.  Tyler takes the roster spot of Carlos Ruiz, who has a " grade 2" strained  hamstring and is likely to be out 3-4 weeks.  Ryan Howard received a cortisone shot in his knee, and is "day-to-day".  Aren't we all?

Last night, Cole Hamels pitched well- 6 innings, 2 runs, 7 hits, NO walks, 10 Ks- but was the hard luck loser in the Marlins' 5-1 victory.  Justin De Fratus threw a scoreless 7th, but when he allowed a leadoff hit in the 8th, he was lifted. Philippe Aumont gave up 3 straight hits when he came in and 3 runs scored, 1 of which was charged to Justin.  The Phillies'  run came courtesy of  Domonic Brown's team leading 8th home run in the 2nd inning.  Domonic (.250) had 2 hits on the night and is playing well.

In Midland, D'Arby Myers (.286) had 4 hits, including a home run, and drove in 5 runs for the Rock Hounds in a wild 19-11 win over Corpus Christi.  D'Arby is one of my favorites, but I would not shake his hand right now...........BECAUSE I WOULD GET BURNED!!!   He is smokin' hot, 15 for 31 (that's .484)  over the last 7 games, with 4 doubles, a triple, the home run, and 10 RBI!!!!!

In Salisbury, the BlueClaws defeated Delmarva, 3-1, as Jonathan Musser won in his Lakewood debut.  The 21-year old threw 5 innings, and allowed just 1 UNearned run, on 5 hits and 3 walks.  Jordan Guth, who has been terrific lately, threw 3 more shut out innings- no hits,  2 walks and 4 Ks.  In his last 4 outings, Jordan has pitched 10.2 innings, and allowed no runs, only 2 hits and 4 walks, striking out 11.  Nice job!!  Roman Quinn had a double and his 4th home run of the year, driving in 2 of the 3 Lakewood runs.  Art Charles, Mitch Walding and Angelo Mora all had 2-hit games for the Claws,  who have won 8 of 11..........In Reading, Jim Murphy, Edgar Duran and Cameron Rupp all homered and the Fightin Phils defeated Altoona, 6-3.  The trio also split the RBIs equally!   This morning, Murphy is 8th in the Eastern League at .318,  2nd in home runs with 10, and tied for 3rd in RBI with 33................In Allentown, Pete Orr had 4 hits and 5 RBI, and Steve Susdorf (.319) had 2 hits, an RBI and scored a run for the IronPigs in a decisive 14-5 win over Rochester.  Mike Stutes threw another 1-2-3 inning, with 2 Ks. Are you watching, Philadelphia?

Gose recalled

The Blue Jays have called up Anthony Gose for the first time this season.  This brings the total number of active HomeSiders in the major leagues to 14.  Anthony hit .255 in 56 games with the Jays last year, stealing 21 bases in 26 attempts.  He was batting .227 in 40 games with Buffalo this year.

Galvis hits walk off HR

In Philadelphia Sunday, Freddy Galvis (.298) hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the 9th inning , one of his 2 hits on the day to give the Phillies  a 3-2 win over the Reds in the rubber game of their series.  Jonathan Pettibone was good again, going 7 innings and allowing just 2 runs, only 1 of which was earned, on 7 hits and 3 walks.  Justin De Fratus threw a scoreless 8th and Antonio Bastardo pitched the 9th and picked the win, his 2nd this year and #19 for HomeSiders this season.  After the game the Phillies announced Carlos Ruiz will stay in Philadelphia today for an MRI on his strained right hamstring, and Ryan Howard will also undergo MRI on his left knee as a precaution.  Ryan will join the Phillies in Miami after his test, and Carlos will probably come along on Tuesday.

In Cleveland, Michael Bourn (.321) had 2 more hits and scored 2 run for the Tribe in their 6-0 win over the Mariners.  Bourn was 7 for 14 in the 3-game set against Seattle over the weekend!...............In Reading, Troy Hanzawa (.339), Jim Murphy (.314), and Zack Collier all had 2 hit for the Fightin Phils, who lost 11-3 to the Senators.  Austin Wright allowed 5 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks in just 2.1 innings, and Juan Sosa allowed 5 more in his his 3 innings of work.  Neither of these guys are having a good time this year, Wright at 11.88, and Sosa at 6.94........In Clearwater, Harold Martinez had 3 hits and 2 RBI, and the Threshers defeated Tampa, 6-2............The BlueClaws were rained out in Lakewood and hit the road today.

In North Little Rock, the Travelers topped Springfield, 5-3.  Mike Cisco retired all 4 hitters he faced for Arkansas, dropping his ERA to 1.98...............In Pensacola, Travis Mattair had a single, a double and a walk for the Blue Wahoos, but Mobile scored 4 runs in the 11th inning and took a 6-4 victory.

Sunday, May 19, 2013

I was just thinking.........

So Tyler Cloyd got hit hard the other day, and when I look at the Reading rotation, it occurs to me that Jesse Biddle will be available the same day Cloyd will.  So do the Phillies put the 21-year old into the fire?   Biddle has 2 wins and a 2.95 ERA in his 8 starts with Reading.

Reds stop Phillies

In Cleveland Saturday, Michael Bourn (.311) had 2 hits, stole 2 bases, and scored a run for the Indians, who made it 3 wins in a row with a 5-4 walk off win against Seattle.  Cleveland leads the AL Central at 24-17.............In Philadelphia, the Reds' Bronson Arroyo shut down the Phillies for a 10-0 Cincinnati win.  Kyle Kendrick was on the wrong end of things this time, going 6 innings and giving up 4 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks to slip to 4-2, 2.82 for the season.  After a scoreless 7th inning, BJ Rosenberg allowed 3 runs in the 8th before leaving. In Oklahoma City, Jonathan Villar hit a 2-out grand slam home run to cap a 6-run 9th inning rally, and the RedHawks scored again in the bottom of the 10th inning to snatch a 7-6 win from Tacoma.  Jason Jaramillo also had an RBI double and scored a run during the big inning..........In Nashville, Jesus Sanchez pitched 3 perfect innings, striking out 5 of the 9 hitters he faced for the Sounds in their 5-2 win over Fresno.   Jesus is 3-0, 1.02 in 11 games for Nashville.  He has allowed just 10 hits and 3 walks in 17.2 innings, giving up 2 earned runs!

Happ hurt; Cloyd named to start Friday

If you haven't already heard or seen the video, Jay Happ got hit in the head by a line drive last night in the 2nd inning in St Petersburg and had to be carried off the field.  This video is not for the faint of heart, so be forewarned!  I will not speculate on how bad it is until we get a report.

Meanwhile, on the field, Kyle Kendrick won his 3rd start in a row, beating the Giants in San Francisco, 6-2.  Kyle (4-1, 2.45) went 7 solid innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, NO walks, and struck out 6.  Ryan Howard (.282) was 2 for 3, including his 6th home run, and walked twice.  The win by Kendrick was #13 for the HomeSide this year.  The Phillies also announced that Tyler Cloyd will make the start on Friday night in place of Roy Halladay, and for the first time ever, the Phillies will have 4 former Claws in the rotation!!

In Lakewood, the BlueClaws wrapped up their homestand with a combined 3-hit shut out, and beat the Legends, 1-0,  Another great outing for Nick Hanson, who threw 6 shut out frames and has thrown 11 such innings in his 2 starts. The win went to Delvi Francisco, who retired all 6 hitters he faced, and Steven Inch rebounded from Sunday's dissaster  for a 1-2-3 9th for his 3rd save.  Chace Numata drove in the game's only run with a 7th inning double.  Numata was also 3 for 3 throwing out potential base stealers!!  Carlos Tocci had another great play in centerfield, and had another single.  Carlos has 5 hits in the last 4 games and is showing some good understanding of the strike zone at bat!  His poise for a 17-year old in noteworthy!!

In Palm Beach, Hoby Milner tossed 7 shut out innings (8 hits, 1 walk, 6 Ks) to lead the Threshers to a 3-0 win over the Cardinals. Hoby improves to 4-2, 4.24 on the year, and Colton Murray notched his 2nd save with a scoreless 9th............In Portland, Hector Neris continues to shine for Reading, this time with 6 good frames in a 5-1 victory over the Sea Dogs.  Neris (3-1, 3.41) allowed just 1 run on 4 hits and NO walks to secure the win.  Mike Nesseth, recently pormoted from Clearwater tossed 2 shut out frames in relief, and Derrick Mitchell and Jim Murphy hit home runs for Reading.  It was the 6th home run for Murphy..................In Allentown, the BJ Rosenberg as a starter experiment is getting mixed reviews.  "Rosie" went 6 innings last night in a 6-4 loss to Louisville, and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and 5 walks.   Steve Susdorf (.297) knocked in 3 runs for the IronPigs.

In Columbus, Michael Bourn made a rehab start for the Clippers in the first game of their doubleheader, and had a hit, a walk, and a stolen base in a 4-2 loss to Charlotte.............In Toledo, the Mud Hens lost in 16 innings, 8-7 to Rochester.  Quintin Berry walked 4 times in the game, stole a bae (#12) and scored a run for Toledo..............In Buffalo, Anthony Gose had a hit and a walk, and stole home for the Bisons in their 6-4 win over the Tides.........In Oklahoma City, Jarred Cosart improved to 4-0, 2.18  on the year, throwing 5.2 innings of shut out ball in the RedHawks' 6-1 win over Tacoma.  Jarred allowed 6 hits and 3 walks, and struck out 10.  Josh Zeid retired all 4 hitters he faced (2 Ks), and stranded an inherited runner in the 6th............In Midland, D'Arby Myers had an RBI hit, stole a base (#7), and scored a run for the Rock Hounds in an 8-5 win over Frisco.

It's not all good news

On Monday, the Phillies placed Roy Halladay on the 15-day DL and recalled Joe Savery from AAA-Lehigh Valley.  It is still unclear at this point who will get the start Friday, which would be Halladay's turn.

Then the Phillies went out and topped the Giants, 6-2 behind a nice game from Cliff LeeDomonic Brown hit his 6th home run, and his 3rd in less than a week, Ryan Howard was 1 for 5, and Freddy Galvis had a pinch hit double in the 9th inning.........In Boston, Vance Worley started the game for Minnesota and went 5+ innings, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits, NO walks, and 3 Ks.  He left the game with the Twins leading 4-3, but the Minnesota bullpen let it get away and Vance remains winless on the year.  The Sox won in 11 innings, 6-5............In Cincinnati, the Braves beat the Reds, 7-4.  Alfredo Simon threw 2 innings and struck out all 6 hitters he faced for the Reds!!!   Impressive!

In Allentown, Darin Ruf (.262) had 2 hits and 2 RBI for the IronPigs, and Lehigh Valley beat Louisville, 4-1.  Steve Susdorf (.303) had a double pinch hitting for Mike Stutes, who tossed 2 perfect innings and was awarded a hold.  Jake Diekman pitched the 9th for his 2nd save...............In Portland, the Sea Dogs beat Reading, 4-3.  Zack Collier had 3 hits for the Fightin' Phils, and Sebastian Valle and Edgar Duran added 2 hit apiece.  Greg Smith, a 29-year old free agent signed by the Phillies the other day, started for Reading and in 5 innings of work, allowed just a 2nd inning home run by Portland's Tony Thomas, and 2 walks.  Juan Sosa continues to struggle this year.  Juan  gave up 2 runs on 3 hits in his 2 innings and his ERA is up 7.71................In Palm Beach, the Threshers beat the Cardinals, 7-3, and evened their record at 15-15.  Kelly Dugan (.314) had 3 hits and an RBI, Carlos Alonso (.317)  and Kyrell Hudson had 2 hits each, and Aaron Altherr (.333) belted his 4th home run.   Maikel Franco drove in 2 runs for the Threshers, and has 29 RBI in the Threshers' 30 games!  Nick Hernandez (3-1, 3.38) pitched 6 more solid innings (2 runs, 4 hits, 2 walks, 9 Ks) to get the win.

In Round Rock, Lisalverto Bonilla's rough adjustment to AAA took another bad turn.  Bonilla allowed 4 runs on 3 hits, 2 of them home runs, in just 1 inning of work in the Express' 9-5 loss to Nashville.  He has allowed 14 earned runs in 15.2 innings, an 8.04 ERA!  Ouch!!   Let's see how he responds.  It is a similar story for Tyson Brummett.  In Manchester , Tyson gave up 2 runs on 3 hits in his 2 innings of relief for the Fisher Cats and saw his ERA go up to 6.26.

In Iowa City, the Cubs beat the RedHawks, 6-1.  Jonathan Villar (.304) had 2 more hits and stole 2 bases (10) for Oklahoma City...............In San Antonio, Domingo Santana (.237) hit his 4th home run of the year for Corpus Christi, and the Hooks beat the Missions, 3-0.  Domingo has struggled since coming off the DL, so maybe this will get him going.

The Chicago White Sox have confirmed Gavin Floyd will have season-ending surgery on his right elbow.

Biddle, Hernandez tops in April

The Phillies have named Jesse Biddle minor league pitcher of the month for April.  No surprise here.  Cesar Hernandez was named position player of the month.

Castro does it again

Roy Halladay has been trying to pitch through a sore right shoulder and,  after Sunday's debacle in Philadelphia, may have to go on the DL.  Halladay was ripped for 9 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks in just 2.1 innings against the Marlins, as the Phillies fell to the Fish, 14-2! ( Maybe in response to this, the Phillies have signed 30-year old lefty Greg Smith.) The Phils had just 4 hits in the game, and Freddy Galvis got the only 1 for our boys, as Howard, Brown and Ruiz combined to go 0 for 8.   Halladay's next start would be Friday, and it could be Adam Morgan, whose turn would come up that night for Lehigh Valley.  Morgan started Sunday against Indianapolis and gave the Pigs 4 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks.  Then, Leandro Castro made it 2 walk-off hits in 2 days with an RBI single in the bottom of the 9th to give the IronPigs a 5-4 win over the Indians.

In New York, Michael Taylor- who flew all the way  across the country- went 0 for 3 for the Athletics in their 5-4 win over the Yankees........In Denver, Josh Outman tossed 2 innings for the Rockies, giving up 2 runs, 1 earned on 3 hits and a walk in Colorado's 8-3 loss to the Rays.........In Cleveland, the Indians announced Michael Bourn will begin a rehab assignment with the Columbus Clippers in preparation for rejoining the team after having the stitches removed from his finger.   The Clippers rode 6 solid innings from Carlos Carrasco (1 run, 4 hits, NO walks, 7 Ks) to a 3-2 win over Rochester on Sunday.  Carlos has posted a 1.90 ERA in 23.2 innings of work for Columbus.  Can you say recall?

In Manchester, Troy Hanzawa (.382) had 3 hits, including 2 doubles and drove in a run, and Jim Murphy hit his 5th home runof the year, but Reading lost a 5-2 game to the Fisher Cats.

In Buffalo, Anthony Gose had 2 hits and scored a run for the Bisons in their 8-2 win over Louisville.  Speaking of the Bats, Jason Donald has been put on their DL, I will try to find out why................In Round Rock, the Express topped Nashville, 5-1.  Jesus Sanchez threw 2 scoreless frames for the Sounds (1 hit 1 walk, 2 Ks), dropping his ERA to 1.23.....................In Pensacola, Travis Mattair hit his 3rd home run and scored 2 runs for the Blue Wahoos in their 8-2 win over Montgomery.

Taylor recalled; Biddle back to earth

Saturday night in Philadelphia, Freddy Galvis' first inning single was the only hit the Phillies managed all night, and Cole Hamels went 8 innings and allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits, NO walks, struck out 6 and was the hard luck loser in a 2-0 Marlins win. The combination of Galvis, Ryan Howard, Domonic Brown, and Carlos Ruiz were 1 for 12 on the day.  Hamels slips to 1-4, 4.24 for the year.

The Athletics have recalled Michael Taylor from Sacramento again.  Maybe this time they will play him a little, instead of letting him rot on the bench like they did for a week last month!

In Tampa, the Threshers scored 5 runs in the top of the 8th inning to tie their game at 7-7, and took the lead in the top of the 11th, only to see the Yankees scored 2 in the bottom half and steal a 9-8 victory.  Maikel Franco (.311) had 3 hits, including a double, his 6th home run, and 2 RBI to lead the attack.  Carlos Alonso (.312) , Aaron Altherr ( double, triple, 2 RBI) and Bob Stumpo added 2 hits each for Clearwater.   Ethan Stewart started and had control issues, again.  "Stew" allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and 7 walks in just 4+  innings of work, facing 6 hitters in the 5th without retiring any.  Luis Paulino gave up 3 runs, 2 earned,  on 5 hits in just 2.1 innings, Mario Hollands came on with the bases loaded and 2 out in the 7th and walked in a run before recording the final out.  Colton Murray pitched well, 2.1 innings, 1 walk, 3 Ks.

In Manchester, Jesse Biddle- after 2 excellent starts in a row- could not get out of the 1st inning.  Jeese walked 4 and allowed a hit, and 3 runs- recording just 2 outs in the Fisher Cats'  15-5 pounding of the Fightin' Phils. 9 different Reading hitters had 1 hit apiece............In Allentown, Leandro Castro's 13th inning single gave the IronPigs a 3-2 win over the  Indians, their 2nd in a row over the first place team.  Mike Stutes (2 IP, 1 hit, 3Ks) and Jake Diekman (1 IP,  2 walks, 1 K) threw scoreless relief for Lehigh Valley, and Mike Zagurski went 1.1 innings (2 walks, 2 Ks) for Indianapolis.

In Portland, Trevor May threw a very good game for New Britain, going 7 innings and allowing just 1 run on 3 hits and 2 walks, and receiving no decision for the Rock Cats in their 2-1 loss to the Sea Dogs.............In Pensacola, Travis Mattair had a single and a double for the Blue Wahoos in their 8-3 loss to Montgomery.

"Good- not bad- to the Bone"

Friday night in Philadelphia, Jonathan Pettibone threw 6.1 solid frames against Miami, to record his 2nd major league win in a the Phillies' 4-1 victory.  "Bone" threw 94 pitches, and gave up just 1 run on 5 hits - NO walks, striking out 3, before yielding to Antonio Bastardo, who completed the 7th inning for his 4th hold of the year. In what has become a nightly occurance, both Ryan Howard and Domonic Brown hit home runs, the 5th for each.  Howard had 2 hits on the night, is up to 18 RBI and .288 for the year.  Carlos Ruiz also had a hit and stole a base!!  The win for Pettibone is #12 for HomeSiders this year.

News out of Chicago is not good, and it looks like Gavin Floyd will have to undergo Tommy John surgery.  Gavin was in New York on Friday seeking a second opinion on his right elbow.

In Clearwater, Chris Seritalla and Cameron Perkins hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the 8th inning and the Threshers took a 4-3 win over the Yankees.  It was the 3rd home run for each, and Perkins had 3 hits on the night, raising his average to an outstanding .368!  Carlos Alonso (.307) added 2 hits for the Threshers.................In Manchester, the Fisher Cats came from behind to beat Reading, 8-5.  David Buchanan started for the R-Phils, and gave up 4 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks over 6 innings of work, and Mike Nesseth recorded the final 5 outs for Reading.  Tyson Brummett started for New Hampshire and lasted just 3 innings, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks.  Brummett's pattern of 1 good start, 1 bad start continues.................In Allentown, Tyler Cloyd recorded his first win of the year with 8 solid innings against the first place Indianapolis Indians.  Cloyd allowed just 1 run on 4 hits and NO walks, striking out 10, before Justin De Fratus pitched a scoreless 9th.   Leandro Castro (.298) had a single, a double, a walk, 2 RBI, 2 stolen bases (7)  and scored a run for the IronPigs.

KK wins again; Villar gets 4 more hits!

In Philadelphia Thursday night, Kyle Kendrick pitched another solid 7 innings against the Marlins, picking up his 3rd win of the season in the Phillies' 7-2 victory.  Kyle (3-1, 2.43) allowed just 2 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5 and even getting a base hit along the way!!  Domonic Brown (.266) had 3 hits, including his 4th home run of the year, and Ryan Howard (.277) also hit his 4th, and walked twice.  Both Brown and Howard scored 2 runs each.  The win for Kendrick was #11 for HomeSiders this year..........In Toronto, Jay Happ struggled with his control, walking 7 and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits in just 3.2 innings of work.  Happ (2-2, 3.98) took the loss in a 3-1 Red Sox' win.

In Allentown, the IronPigs dropped a 9-6 game to Indianapolis.  Leandro Castro (.284) had 2 hits, including his 3rd home run.  BJ Rosenberg started and lasted just 4 innings, slipping to 0-3, 5.11 on the year.  Brian gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks.  Jake Diekman had an exciting inning, allowing a run on 1 hit and 3 walks, striking out the side in the process, and Michael Stutes tossed a 1-2-3 9th.  The news was no better in Reading, where the Sea Dogs topped the Fightin' Phils, 7-4.  Edgar Duran (.259) was 3 for 4 for Reading, who slip to 12-13 on the year.  Hector Neris started and went 4.2 innings, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks, absorbing his first loss of the year.  Juan Sosa gave up 2 runs on 2 walks and 1 hit in his 1.1 innings, and Jay Johnson threw 2 shut out frames....................In Tampa, Hoby Milner (3-2) tossed 6 shut out frames (3 hits, 1 walk, 8 Ks), and Jose Mojica was 4 for 4 as the Threshers topped the Yankees, 8-0.   Maikel Franco (.303) had 2 hits and 2 walks, and Aaron Altherr (.340) drove in 3 with a double and a sacrifice fly.  Aaron now has 16 RBI for Clearwater.

In Lakewood, 8 different BlueClaws had 1 hit each and Nick Hanson threw 5 shut out innings (2 hits, 3 walks, 5 Ks)  in his first start as Lakewood made it 2 in a row over Charleston with a 6-0 win.  Jordan Guth, Zack Cooper, and Geoff Broussard finished off the shut out, the second of the year for the Claws.

In Oklahoma City, Jonathan Villar was 4 for 4, including a home run off Jesus Sanchez, and drove in 5 ruins to power the RedHawks to a 9-1 pounding of the Sounds.  Villar is 28 for his last 62, a scorching .452 mark over the past 15 games.  The home run was the only run allowed by Sanchez, who saw his ERA bump up to 1.42.  The winning pitcher was Josh Zeid, who threw 2 perfect frames with 3 Ks to improve to 2-0, 2.19, with 2 saves..............In Buffalo, the Bisons lost a 4-1 game to Louisville.  Anthony Gose (.261) had 2 hits for the Bisons............In Salt Lake City, Greg Golson (.421 in his first week with SkySox) was 1 for 3 and stole his 3rd base of the week in the Sox' 2-1 loss to the Bees...........In Pearl, Brian Schlitter threw another scoreless frame for the Smokies in their 7-0  win over the Braves.  Brian has not allowed an earned run in 12.1 innings of work so far for Tennessee...........In Corpus Christi, D'Arby Myers (.270) had 2 hits for Midland, who dropped a 6-1 game to the Hooks.  Domingo Santana had a hit and 2 walks, with an RBI for the winners.

Numata paces Claws

As expected, the Phillies named Jesse Biddle minor league pitcher of the week yesterday, but selected Biddle's teammate Cesar Hernandez as the player of the week (my pick was Aaron Altherr, but Hernandez was also worthy).

Last night in Los Angeles, Josh Outman was in the right place at the right time for the Rockies, pitching 2 shut out frames for Colorado (1 hit, NO walks) and picking up the victory over the Dodgers, 7-3.  It was win #10 for HomeSiders in the majors this year.  Kyle Kendrick and Jay Happ will each get the ball tonight looking to add to that total.  Kendrick comes off his masterful, 3-hit,  complete game shut out in New York last week.  Speaking of the Phillies, they will be glad to get out of Cleveland after their 6-0 loss last night.  The Tribe outscored Philadelphia, 20-2 in the 2-game set.   Domonic Brown had 2 of the Phillies' 3 hits.

In Lakewood, Chace Numata had 3 hits, including the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the 7th to pace the BlueClaws to a 4-3 win over Charleston.  Chace has been hot, 10 for 24 (that's .416) in his last 7 games, and has his season average up to .305.  Willie Carmona (9 for his last 16) doubled home the eventual winning run, and made  a run-saving stab of a line drive with the infield in and the tying run at third base in the top of the 8th.  Willie was playing first for the injured Art Charles, who injured his wrist Monday in Asheville.  The good news is it is not broken, and Charles will probably be out just a week or so.  Yoel Mecias pitched 4 very good ininngs, before seemingly losing his cool a little when second baseman Angelo Mora made a throwing error to start the 5th.  In truth Mecias recovered and after 2 runs were in and runners on 2nd and 3rd- still no out- Yoel and Miguel Nunez combined to stop the bleeding, which led to the 1-run win!   Nunez improved to 3-0, with a 2.91 in his 5 appearances, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, NO walks, after coming into the bases loaded, 2-out jam in the 5th, and stranding all 3 runners.  I also have to mention 17-year old Carlos Tocci, who had 2 hits, 2 stolen bases and 2 diving catches in center field.

In Reading, Jim Murphy's 4th home run was the lone run in a 2-1 loss to Portland. Brody Colvin came off the DL and pitched 3 innings and gave up a run on 3 hits and 1 walk, striking out 3, Tyler Knigge threw 2 scoreless frames, and Cameron Rupp had 2 of Reading's 5 hits.......In Corpus Christi, the Hooks beat Midland, 3-2 in 11 innings.  In the top of the 10th, D'Arby Myers led off with a single and scored the go-ahead run for the Rock Hounds. The Hooks tied it in the 10, then in the bottom of the 11th, Domingo Santana led off with a walk, and scored the winning run!

In Oklahoma City, Jonathan Villar was 1 for 4, an RBI double for the RedHawks in their 6-2 win over Nashville..............In Salt Lake City, Greg Golson had a single, a stolen base, and scored a run for the SkySox, but the Bees took an 8-7 win..............In Fresno, Michael Taylor (.319) had 2 more hits and scored a run for Sacramento in the River Cats' 4-1 win over the Grizzlies.
