Tuesday in Florida, 8 WBC teams squared off against major league teams as they prepare for the opening of the classic next week.
In Lakeland, the Tigers defeated Venezuela, 7-5. Victor Moreno pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning for Venezuela.
In Dunedin, Canada beat the Blue Jays, 6-4. Randy Ruiz was 1 for 2, a double. He also had a walk and scored a run for the Jays.
In Kissimmee, the Braves pounded Panama, 11-2. Carlos Ruiz had a single in 2 at bats, and Avelino Asprilla, a member of the 2006 championship team in Lakewood, was 0 for 1, playing third base. He played second base exclusively for the BlueClaws.
In the other games involving WBC teams, Dominican Republic defeated the Marlins, 10-1, the Nationals outslugged Italy, 9-6, the Pirates edged the Netherlands, 5-4, Minnesota topped Puerto Rico, 3-2 and Team USA defeated the Yankees, 6-5.
In St Pete, the Rays were all over the Astros, 12-2. Michael Bourn had a single and a walk in 3 plate appearances and stole 2 bases. Actually, he stole 1 base, second, twice!!
Out in Arizona, the Giants edged the D-Backs, 6-5. Chris Roberson was 1 for 5, an RBI single. Cleveland and Kansas City played a 9-9, 10 inning game. Considering the amount of runs scored, Robinson Tejeda didn't do too badly, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 1 hit, 3 walks, 3 strike outs. The Cubs beat the Athletics, 6-4. Gio Gonzalez pitched 2 scoreless innings for Oakland, retiring all 6 hitters he faced, striking out 3 of them. Adrian Cardenas pinch hit for him with 2 on in the 9th inning and grounded out.
