Phils sweep Braves

In a series that already provided Kyle Kendrick with his 8th victory of the year, the Phillies rode the strong arm of Cole Hamels to a 4-1 win last night and a sweep of the Braves. Philadelphia seems to have Atlanta's number this year, it is the second sweep of a series in Atlanta this year for the Fightin' Phils, and appear to be back on track for a big series this weekend with New York. More on that in a minute. First, Kendrick followed up what was his best major league outing last week in Oakland with another stellar performance to improve to 8-3, 4.58 on the year. Last night, Hamels came within 1 out of a complete game shut out, throwing 125 pitches, before yielding a run with 2 down in the 9th, Tom Gordon picking up the final out for him. Cole is now 9-5, 3.22. Ryan Howard hit his 22nd home run, and 2nd in 2 nights, driving in his league leading 72nd run of the season.

The Phillies return home tonight to battle the Mets, with J.A. Happ getting the assignment against Johan Santana.
