In Bradenton, Trevor May pitched the Clearwater Threshers to a 3-2 victory over the Marauders. May was great, going 7 strong inning, giving up just 1 run on 4 hits, walking 3 and striking out 11! It was the 3rd win of the year for May, with Derrick Loop and Justin Friend each throwing an inning, Loop getting his 3rd "hold" and Friend recording his 15th save despite giving up a run.
Each of the 9 hitters in the starting line up had 1 hit for the Threshers, the big one was an RBI-double by Troy Hanzawa in the 8th inning for what turned out to be the game winning run.
In Delamrva, the BlueClaws started their road trip by losing their 5th straight game, 6-5 to the Shorebirds. David Buchanan had a rough start for the Claws, only going 3.1 innings and being charged with 5 runs on 9 hits and 5 walks, falling to 5-2 on the year. Chase Johnson came on, and kept Lakewood in the game, throwing 2.2 innings and allowing just 3 hits. Newly arrived Jacob Borup gave up a run on 5 hits in 2 innings of work.
Mike Dabbs made his season debut with Lakewood with 2 doubles, an RBI and a run scored and Edgar Duran had another 2 hits, driving in 2 runs. Edgar is 11 for 22 (.500) in the last 6 games.
In Portland, Mike Spidale had 3 hits, stole a base and drove in a run for Reading, but the Sea Dogs took the game, 14-4. Derrick Mitchell had the only other multi-hit game, a single and a double with a run scored, in a contest that saw Reading leave 8 runners in scoring position on the night.
It was a rare bad performance for Austin Hyatt, who gave up 6 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in just 3.1 innings. But that was only the beginning as each Reading pitcher who came on gave up runs. Jacob Diekman (1.2 IP, 3 runs, 2 earned, 4 hits, walk), Chris Kissock (2 IP, 2 runs, 1 earned, 4 hits) and Jordan Ellis (.2 IP, 3 runs, 2 hits, 3 walks) all encountered problems and in the end, manager Mark Parent had to turn to Tim Kennelly to secure the final out.
