Monday's highlights

First action Monday afternoon was in Detroit, where Gavin Floyd struggled through 5 innings against the Tigers. Floyd had control trouble, walking 7 and allowing 6 runs on 5 hits, but toughed his way through 5 on a day where the White Sox scored enough to get him a win. Final score, Chicago 10, Detroit 6.

Ryan Howard's first home run of the season, a 3-run blast that was 1 of 2 hits he had on the night, helped the Phillies to a 9-8 win over the Nationals Monday.

In Fresno, Andy Baldwin made his season debut for Tacoma, and worked 6 shut out innings. Baldwin allowed just 3 hits and 1 walk, striking out 3, and gaining the victory, 1-0 for the Rainiers. In Salt Lake City, Randy Ruiz had a single, a double, and a home run, driving in 4 runs, raising his average to .471. The 51s still lost, 8-7. In Allentown, the IronPigs won their first game of the year, 5-1 over Syracuse. Jason Donald was 0 for 5.

In Reading, the R-Phils defeated Binghamton, 4-1 with strong pitching. Michael Stutes was fabulous, throwing 5 shut out innings, giving up just 2 hits and 3 walks. He also had 5 strike outs and picked up the win. Josh Shortslef, Matt German, Joe Bisenius, and Sergio Escalona, allowed just 1 hit over the final 4 innings. Escalona picked up his second save. Catcher Kevin Nelson had 3 hits, including a double and a home run, to lead the Reading offense. In Springfield, MO, Adrian Cardenas (.308) had 2 more hits, knocking in a run and scoring another, but Midland still lost to the Cardinals, 8-7.

Clearwater defeated Dunedin, 5-2 behind strong pitching from Yohan Flande. Flande threw 5 innings, allowing an unearned run on 3 hits and 2 walks to earn the victory. Zack Sterner gave up a run in the 6th, but Joe Rocchio and Jared Simon slammed the door from there. Tim Kennelley had 2 doubles and a stolen base, and Mike Durant got his first hit and first RBI. In Jupiter, the Hammerheads lost 4-3 to Palm Beach. Brett Harker tossed 2 shut out innings for Jupiter, giving up just 1 hit, striking out 3. In Modesto, Scott Mitchinson made his first start for Stockton and got through 5 innings. Scott gave up just 1 run on 4 hits, and 1 walk, and left the game with a 2-1 lead. Modesto came back to win, 4-2.

The Lakewood BlueClaws got 3 hits each from Harold Garcia, Travis Mattair, and Travis D'Arnaud to overcome a 5-run deficit and defeat the Lake County Captains, 11-9. Lou Collier chipped in with 2 doubles, 2 walks, and a stolen base, and James Murphy smacked his first home run of the season. Jon Velasquez got the victory, his second, with 3.2 strong innings in relief of Jacob Diekman, who did not get out of the third frame. Santos Hernandez (2 IP, 1 run, 3 hits) and Ryan Bergh (1 IP, 2K, save) finished it off for Lakewood.

If I have it correct, the starting assignments for Tuesday are:

Tyler Cloyd for Lakewood

Carlos Monasterios for Clearwater

Alex Concepcion for Reading

Kyle Kendrick for Lehigh Valley

Alfredo Simon for Baltimore @ Texas
