With all the offensive problem the Lakewood BlueClaws have had this early season, you would think that 12 runs would be enough to win a game. Not on Friday, as the Claws were beat by the Tourists, 13-12. Geancarlo Mendez, the hottest BlueClaw, had 4 hits for Lakewood, including a double, drove in 2 runs and scored 4 times. Mendez is hitting .409 and his bat is screaming for more playing time. Jeremy Barnes had a double and a home run, and dove in 4 runs, and Domingo Santana, Steve Batts, Anthony Hewitt and Cameron Rupp all had multi-hit games for Lakewood.
For the first time this year, the pitching let Lakewood down. Jesse Biddle did not get out of the 4th inning. He had trouble with his control- walking 5, and did not get much help from his defense. In all, Jesse gave up 4 runs, only 2 earned, on 3 hits. Hector Neris threw gas on the fire, allowing 2 inherited runners to score and 3 more runs of his own before getting out of the inning. Colby Shreve came on and took one for the team, working 4.1 innings allowing 6 runs, 5 earned, on 10 hits and 3 walks to be tagged with the loss. Just for good measure, Tyler Knigge came on and, after picking up a strike out, wild pitched home the winning run!
