Claws start trip with win

The BlueClaws started their 8 game road trip with a win in South Carolina Thursday, beating Charleston 5-2. Ervis Manzanillo continues to flash some good stuff and got his first win of the season with 6 good innings. He gave up 2 runs on just 5 hits, but 4 walks is too high. Overall, a very good performance by the 19-year old. Lisalberto Bonilla made his debut with 2 scoreless innings and Tyler Knigge threw the 9th and recorded his first save.

Carlos Perdomo had 3 hits and an RBI for the Claws, and Alan Schoenberger had a walk, a double and a home run to pace the Lakewood attack. One of the most encouraging signs of the team so far has been the play of the bench players. With the majority of the regulars off to a collective slow start, the play of Perdomo, Geancarlo Mendez (who has forced his way into a regular spot) and now Schoenberger has been a real lift. I guess Garrett Claypool nudging his way into the rotation also qualifies!

Another guy who was not in the rotation, but has pushed his way in at this time is Tyler Cloyd in Clearwater. Cloyd got his shot when Brody Colvin went on the DL, and has come through for the Threshers. Tyler allowed just 1 run Friday against Lakeland in the Threshers 5-1 win. That staff is certainly loaded. Cloyd is now 2-1, with a 2.57 ERA in 7 appearances, 5 of them starts. Eric Pettis made his Clearwater debut with 2 scoreless innings (2 hits, 3 Ks) and Ebelin Lugo retired all 6 hitters he faced.

Jeremy Barnes (RBI, .438 since promotion), Jonathan Singleton (.311), Joe Savery (.433) and Cesar Hernandez (.171) all had 2 hit games for Clearwater, who are now 19-9 and still a game behind Daytona.

In Reading, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats ended the R-Phils home stand with a 10-5 defeat. Anthony Gose reached base in the first inning on a Fidel Hernandez error, promptly stole second (#10) and started a 3 run rally. In the third inning, is was deja vu. This time Gose walked and was balked to second by a clearly rattled J.C. Ramirez. Before that inning was over, the Fisher Cats had scored 3 more, taking a 6-2 lead, and Ramirez was gone. Mike Cisco came on for Reading, and threw 3.1 innings of shut out ball, keeping Reading in striking distance.

Hernandez, who second error opened the door for 3 more unearned runs in the 9th, had the only 2-hit game for Reading. Matt Rizzotti (.326) hit his 4th home run. Reading is now 16-10 and tied for first place with New Hampshire. They will open a set with the Senators in Harrisburg Friday night, and Austin Hyatt will be looking for his 4th win.
