weekend highlights

After Vance Worley's win on Friday night, Kyle Drabek took the hill in Yankees Stadium Saturday and did not make it out of the 3rd inning, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks in New York's 5-4 win over the Jays to slip to 2-1 on the year. Then Sunday, in Chicago, Gavin Floyd (3-2) lost to Baltimore, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks. The White Sox have lost 5 in a row, and 15 of their last 18. On Sunday night, the Mets edged the Phillies , 2-1 in 14 innings, with Kyle Kendrick (3 IP, 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks, 1-2) absorbing the loss and Taylor Buchholz threw the final 2 frames for New York to notch his first win. The Phillies' run was driven in by Ryan Howard, his league leading 28th. Mike Stutes and Antonio Bastardo combined to throw an inning of scoreless relief in the 8th.

In Lakewood Sunday afternoon, Savannah beat the BlueClaws, 3-2, with both Lakewood runs coming on home runs by Anthony Hewitt, his first 2 of the season. Hewitt is on a 12-game hitting streak and is hitting the ball hard consistently for the first time in his year and a a month with Lakewood. Geancarlo Mendez had 3 more hits for Lakewood, raising his average to .351.

In Clearwater, Trevor May won his 2nd game of the season, but is still experiencing control issues, walking 6 in his 5 innings, but Brian Gump's 4 hits and 3 RBI by Joe Savery helped May to a 5-3 victory over Tampa. Matt Payton, who the Phillies drafted last June, had 3 for 4 in his debut. The Threshers a re now 15-9, 1 game back of Daytona.

In Reading, the R-Phils won their 5th straight, 3-2 over Portland with Austin Hyatt recording his 3rd win of the season. Cody Overbeck had 2 home runs for Reading (he now has 8 on the year), Tyson Brummett notched a hold with 2 scoreless innings, and Justin De Fratus picked up his 3rd save after saving Saturday's also. Reading is now 16-7, 3 games in front of New Britain.

In Charlotte, Jason Donald had 3 hits and 3 RBI for Columbus in the Clipper's 9-3 victory over the Knights. Donald is 5 for 12 (.417) in 4 games with the Clippers, hoping to get back to the Indians, who have a major league league best 19-8 record. Another guy looking to get to the majors is Donald's Lakewood teammate, Adrian Cardenas. "A.C." hit his first home run of the year Sunday in Las Vegas, and is hitting .353 for Sacramento.

In Pearl, Mississippi, Jesus Sanchez (5.2 innings, 1 UNearned run, 5 hits and 1 walk) and Darrin Byrd (2.1 IP, 1 run, 3 hits) again combined to get the Huntsville Stars a win, 3-2 over the Braves. It was the second win for Sanchez, and Byrd's ERA is a stellar 0.60 for the Milwaukee affiliate.
