Thursday night in Columbus, the Clippers took a doubleheader from the Rochester Red Wings, 5-1 and 6-4. In the nightcap, Randy Ruiz had 2 doubles and his 16th RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, there also was a doubleheader in Oklahoma City, between the Red Hawks and the Sacramento River Cats. In the first game, Gio Gonzalez started for Sacramento and went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5, leaving the game with the score tied at 4-4. The Cats got 2 in the 9th to win 6-4, Gonzalez received no decision. Gio is 0-2, 5.18 in 7 starts for Sacramento. In game 2, Elizardo Ramirez got the start for Oklahoma, and got hit hard. "Easy" gave up 12 hits and 6 runs (only 4 earned) in 5 innings of work, and was the losing pitcher in Sacramento's 7-1 win for the sweep. Ramirez is 4-3, 4.50 in his 6 starts.
Over in Tucson, Jesus Merchan (.371) was 2 for 3 and drove in a run (#11) for the Sidewinders in Nashville's 10-4 win.
The independents are starting play, and the American Association has 4 former 'Claws as play begins. Sean Gamble (3 for 5 in opener) is playing for the Pensacola Pelicans, Zac Cline will pitch for the Lincoln Saltdogs, Paige Dumont (2007 BlueClaw) will be assigned to the Sioux City Explorers, and Vinny DeChristofaro will throw for the Grand Prairie AirHogs.
