Hamels making progress

Cole Hamels threw 64 pitches in a minor league game in Clearwater Monday afternoon, giving up 3 runs on 10 hits and a walk and picking up 5 strike outs in 4 innings of work against the AAA Yankees. At this point it looks like Cole will pitch the final preseason game Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia against the Rays, and then make his regular season debut in Colorado on Friday, the 10th.

The Phillies have optioned Carlos Carrasco back to minor league camp, along with John Mayberry, adding 2 more to the already overcrowded Lehigh Valley roster. The IronPigs are now 9 players over the roster limit, not including Mike Koplove, Jason Ellison and Pablo Ozuna who have been told they will not open the season in Philadelphia, but are going north to play in the on deck series. There will be some serious cuts coming at the end of the week as the minor league rosters have to be finalized by Friday.

Some of Saturdays minor league highlights included Matt Rizzotti going 4 for 4, Freddy Galvis getting 3 hits and 3 RBI, 3 more hits by Arlon Quiroz and 2 hits each for Quintin Berry, T.J.Warren, P.J. Antoniato and Derrick Mitchell.

Tyson Brummett (3.2 IP, 2 earned runs, 5 Ks), Carlos Monasterios (4 IP, 2 earned runs, 4 Ks), and Tyler Cloyd (4 IP, 3 hits, 5 Ks) all had good starts while Zack Sterner, Chris Kissock, Ryan Bergh, Jared Simon, and Eryk McConnell were all effective in relief, giving up no runs between the 5 of them!!
