Before I get to Monday, lets go back to Sunday afternoon in Seattle, a game the Mariners won, 8-7, in 15 innings. Josh Outman was the starting pitcher for Oakland, returning to the rotation to make his first start since April 17. Josh was effective for 6 innings, throwing 87 pitches, and allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits and 1 walk, striking out 5 and receiving no decision. When Russ Springer gave up the game-tying home run to Kenji Jojima, the A's threw recently recalled Gio Gonzalez into the game, to mixed results. In all, Gonzalez pitched 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits. The big problem was 4 walks, but Gio ate some innings for Oakland, throwing 108 pitches in the outing.
On to Monday, where in Washington Michael Bourn (.299) had a double and an RBI in the National's 9-4 win over Houston. In Pittsburgh, Jason Jaramillo (.308) continues to make the most of his opportunity, this time with 2 doubles, the second one a 2-out, RBI job in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead over the Brewers. The Brewers came back in the 9th to win, but "JJ" came through in the clutch AB big time! Speaking of big-time, that thunderous sound you heard last night was Ryan Howard launching his second grand slam of the season, as the Phillies beat the Cardinals in St Louis where Howard had several family members in attendance. Ryan also had another hit and a walk, top increase his season average to .293 (impressive!!) with 5 home runs and 19 RBI.
In Norwich, Connecticut, the Reading Phillies came from behind to beat the Defenders, 4-2 Monday. Vance Worley (2.37 ERA) had another fine outing: 6 innings, 2 runs, 6 hits, NO walks, 7 Ks. Mike Zagurski threw another scoreless inning, 1 walk, 2 strike outs, and recently reassigned Jason Anderson picked up the win with 2 perfect frames. Reading trailed in the game 2-0, going into the 7th inning and began to chip away. They scored 1 in the 7th when Tuffy Gosewisch was hit by a pitch and Mike Spidale, hitting for Worley, singled him home. After the Phils tied it in the 8th, Michael Taylor drew a 1-out walk in the 9th. After advancing to second on a ground out by Quintin Berry, Taylor came in on a single by Brad Harman, who would later scored himself. Reading is now 14-8 on the season, 4 games behind Akron for first place.
Julian Sampson's tough season continued last night in Clearwater, as Brevard County jumped on the big right-hander for 3 in the first inning, en route to a 6-4 win over the Threshers. Sampson (1-4, 7.52) gave up 6 runs on 7 hits, NO walks, in 6 innings of work. Zack Sterner (2 IP, 2 K) and Chris Kissock (1 IP, 1 K) were perfect in relief. Clearwater managed just 6 hits, 3 by centerfielder Javis Diaz. Dominic Brown (.308) had his hitting streak halted, but had a walk and a stolen base, and an RBI on a sac fly.
In Salt Lake City, Andrew Baldwin gave the Tacoma Rainiers 6 innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks, striking out 4. Baldwin (2-1, 2.60) received no decision, leaving the game with a 5-4 lead, the Bees eventually winning it, 9-7. In Stockton, Matt Spencer was 0 for 3, ending an 11-game hitting streak that saw him hit hit .386, with 2 doubles, 4 home runs, and 13 RBI in the 11 games for the Stockton Ports. In Iowa City, R.J. Swindel pitched 2 scoreless innings for Nashville to record a "hold", as the Sounds beat the Cubs, 5-1. RJ has thrown 9 innings for Nashville, allowing just 3 hits and 3 walks, striking out 12. He also made 1 appearance last week for Milwaukee, before being returned.
Adrian Cardenas has been promoted by the Athletics to AAA Sacramento. After hitting .372 in 19 games for AA Midland, Cardenas got the call last Friday, and has played 3 games for the River Cats, going 1 for 10, with 3 walks.
My calendar shows these assignments today-
