Brown, d'Arnaud, Ruiz & Singleton

In New York Wednesday, the Philles took the rubber match of their series with the Mets, winning 10-6.  Carlos Ruiz, still sitting out with a bad leg, belted a 2-run pinch hit home run in the 7th inning to tie it at 3-3 and propel the Phils to victory.  Freddy Galvis was sitting out also, just for rest, but he came on late and walked and scored a run in the Phillies 6-run 9th.  Antonio Bastardo was the winning pitcher, throwing a scoreless frame for his 2nd victory.

That makes 28 major league wins for the HomeSide so far this season.

In Boston, the Red Sox topped the Tigers, 6-4.  Quintin Berry had a triple and scored a run for Detroit, and has now hit in 6 of his first 7 games in the majors.  The latest on Austin Jackson, who "Q" is playing for, is that he is not ready to play yet, although he is eligible to come off the DL this Friday........In Atlanta, Michael Bourn (.299) had a single and a walk, and score twice for the Braves as they beat the Cardinals, 10-7.

In Gwinnett, Domonic Brown (.264) had 3 more hits, including his 1st home run, as the IronPigs beat the Braves, 6-3.  It was the 4th multi-hit game for Dom in the last 5, and he is 9 for 21 (.429) in that stretch. The win went to BJ Rosenberg (1-0, 1.45) who gave up an unearned run in 1.2 innings........In Tampa, D'Arby Myers (.321) had 2 doubles, including one in the middle of the 4-run rally in the 8th inning, to help the Threshers defeat the Yankees, 5-4.  Zack Collier was 3 for 4,  and is 5 for 8 in 2 games since being activated.  Brody Colvin (3-4) was the winning pitcher, tossing 2 scoreless innings of relief.

In Tucson, red-hot Travis d'Arnaud (.328) had 3 more hits, including a double, drove in a run and scored another, and Anthony Gose extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a hit and an RBI as the Las Vegas 51s beat the Padres, 7-4.

In Reno, Randy Ruiz belted his 13th home run of the year, a 3-run shot to help pace the Aces to a 13-5 victory over Tacoma.   Randy lead the PCL with 51 RBI...........In Buffalo, the Bisons beat Columbus, 3-2 in 10 innings.  Jason Donald (.300) had a triple and scored a run for the Clippers................In North Little Rock, Jonathan Singleton hit his 10th home run of the year, and Josh Zeid recorded his 2nd victory of the season as the Hooks beat the Travelers, 3-2.

In Charleston, the BlueClaws dropped another one to the Power, 10-5.  Kelly Dugan and Maikel Franco each hit home runs for Lakewood.

Singleton wins award

Kudos to Jonathan Singleton, who was voted Texas League Player of the week from May 21-27.  Singleton had 12 hits in the 6 games, 4 of them home runs, and drove in 12 runs while hitting .429 for the Corpus Christi Hooks.

Tyson Gillies of Reading won the same honor in the Eastern League, going 11 for 28 (.393) for the week.

BlueClaws roster

OK, not unexpentantly, there have been some changes to the Lakewood roster.

First- Ervis Manzanillo has been activated from the DL,  with Josh Warner returning to extended spring training.

Catcher Logan Moore has been sent back to extended, and John Hill has been returned from Clearwater.  This could actually be a break for Hill, who was with the Threshers for 17 days, and got in just 4 games, with 13 ABs.

Infielder Gustavo Gonzalez was returned to EST, and replaced by Alejandro Villalobos, who was slated for the GCL and getting a big chance here.

Also Austin Brough was return to extended, and Chris Duffy has been returned from Clearwater.

Mario Hollands has also been promoted to the Threshers!  Congratulations, Mario!!

Moore and Gonzalez have really been struggling, so a return to Florida with assignment to Williamsport when they begin play in a few weeks can give both of them a fresh start.

In New York Tuesday, the Mets beat the Phillies for the 6th time in 8 meetings so far this year, 6-3. Freddy Galvis, who had been hitting well, had his 2nd straight 0 for 4, his average slipping to .231, and Jacob Diekman threw another impressive inning, striking out 2 of the 3 hitters he faced in the 7th, while Joe Savery threw a scoreless 8th inning.

In Boston, the Red Sox topped the Tigers, 6-3.  Quintin Berry (.310) was 0 for 4, his first hitless game since his call-up.......In Atlanta, Michael Bourn led off the 1st inning with his 5th home run of the season, and the Braves went on to beat the Cardinals, 5-4, winning for just the 2nd time in the last 10 games.

In Gwinnett, Yohan Flande threw 7 shut out innings against the IronPigs, as the Braves beat Lehigh Valley, 4-0.  Derrick Mitchell, Tim Kennelly, and Tuffy Gosewisch picked up the hits for the Pigs.

In Clearwater, Zack Collier came off the suspended list and had 2 hits for the Threshers, in their 4-3 loss to Tampa.  Anthony Hewitt had a double and a triple, and Cody Asche added 3 hits for Clearwater in the losing effort.  Jesse Biddle started and put in 7 strong innings, allowing 2 runs, just 1 earned on only 4 hits and  2 walks, striking out 9.  Tyler Knigge allowed the winning run in the 10th inning, but his ERA is still a stellar 0.98.

The Las Vegas 51s have moved on from Salt Lake City to Tucson, where they dropped the first game of their series, 11-10 to the Padres.  Anthony Gose (.294) had 2 hits, including a triple, stole 2 more bases (total of 23) and knocked in a run to extend his hitting streak to 12 games, and Travis d'Arnaud (.321)  had a single, a double and his 12th home run of the year, driving in 2 runs for Vegas.  Bobby Korecky (3-1, 3.86) was the losing pitcher, giving up a home run to Jedd Gyorko for the deciding run........In Reno, Randy Ruiz (.346) followed up his 4 hit game with 3 for 3 and a walk Tuesday for the Aces in their 7-5 win over Tacoma.

Doc disabled

The Phillies have placed Roy Halladay on the 15-day DL with a strained right shoulder, and he could be out 6-8 weeks.  With an off-day on Thursday, the Phillies won't need another starter until June 6.  If Vance Worley is not ready by then, Tyler Cloyd could get the call-up from Lehigh Valley.

4 hits for Homie; Gose streak to 11

In Sacramento, Randy Ruiz (.333) had 4 hits, including his 12th home run, driving in 2 more runs (that's 48 already) to pace the Reno Aces to a 10-2 win over the River Cats.

In Harrisburg, David Buchanan threw a complete game, 7-hit shut out for Reading, and 7 different R-Phils picked up 2 hits each in Reading's 8-0 win over the Senators.  Buchanan (2-5, 4.04) walked just 1 and struck out 4. Sebastian Valle had a triple and a home run, knocking in 3 runs, and Darin Ruf (.343), Leandro Castro (.278), Jeremy Barnes (.208) and Troy Hazawa (.321) all added 2 hits to the attack.

In Gwinnett, Mike Schwimer gave up 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning as the Braves completed a comeback from down 8-0, to take a 9-8 win from the IronPigs.  Domonic Brown (.256, 2 runs, stolen base),  Cody Overbeck (.274, double, RBI) and Tim Kennelly all had 2 hits for Lehigh Valley.

In Salt Lake City, Anthony Gose extended his hitting streak to 11 games with 2 hits and a run scored for Las Vegas in the 51s' 6-2 win over the Bees.  Gose is 22 for 46 over the 11 games, a .478 clip.  Travis d'Arnaud saw his streak stopped, but did walk and score a run to aid the 51s cause..............In Kodak, Jason Jaramillo (.258)  had 2 hits and scored a run for Huntsville in the Star's 8-4 win over the Smokies.  Jesus Sanchez (0.81) recorded the final 4 outs, 2 with Ks, to notch his 5th save of the season for Huntsville.

In Charleston, the BlueClaws began their road trip with a 4-3 loss to West Virginia.  Aaron Altherr had 2 more hits, including his 3rd home run, and Kyrell Hudson had a single and a double and knocked in a run for Lakewood.  Kenny Giles, Austin Brough, and Luis Paulino all threw shut out ball, but Gabriel Arias allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in just 1.1 innings, and that was enough for the Power to win it.

Cole does it again

In New York Monday, Cole Hamels won for the 8th time in a row after losing his first start, by throwing 8 solid innings against the Mets in the Phillies 8-4 win.  Cole allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk, striking out 6 along the way.  He also had a base hit in the game.

Kleven, Alonso honored

The Phillies have named Lakewood starter Colin Kleven minor league pitcher of the week, and Clearwater infielder Carlos Alonso minor league player of the week, for the week ending May 20.  Congratulations to both of them.

love those 51s!

If the Las Vegas 51s never leave Salt Lake City, I don't think Travis d'Arnaud and Anthony Gose will mind.  They are both tearing it up in that series.  On Sunday, d'Arnaud (.318) belted 2 doubles, his 11th home run and drove in 4 runs, and has 8 hits and 8 RBI in the 3 games.  Over the last 10 games, in which he has hit in all of them, Travis is 20 for 43 (465!!) with 7 of the 10 multi-hit games.  Gose (.291) had 2 singles, a walk, 2 stolen bases (20), and scored 3 runs.  Anthony is 7 for 12 in the 3 games so far, and is 20 for 41 (.488) during his 10 game stretch.  Bobby Korecky (3-0) was the winning pitcher, with 2 innings of work in the 51s 8-3 win. This series will conclude today.

In Charlotte, the Knights beat the IronPigs, 7-2  Domonic Brown and Mike Spidale had 2 hits each for Lehigh Valley, and Derrick Mitchell threw out a runner at first from the outfield.  BJ Rosenberg (1.59)pitched 2 innings and allowed a rare run on 2 hits and a walk, but struck out 4. Tyson Brummett followed with a scoreless frame.........In Harrisburg, Reading lost a 6-5 decision to the Senators. Trevor May started and went 6.1 innings, charged with 4 runs on 5 hits and a walk, and gaining no decision. Lisalberto Bonilla (1-1 since promotion from Clearwater) gave up the winning run. Leandro Castro (.272) had 3 hits and scored a run for Reading, and Troy Hanzawa (.314) had 2 more hits and is looking more like an all star everyday.

In Lakewood Sunday night, the Hagerstown Suns took a 7-6 win from the BlueClaws, taking 5 of 6 in the series.  The last 2 games, however, there have been signs of life in the Lakewood offense.  Right now Harold Martinez is hot, 2 more doubles Sunday, and should have had another hit, was robbed by the scorer.  It was good to see Aaron Altherr pick up a couple of hits.   Martinez was 8 for 23 (.348) on the homestand, while Altherr is hitting the ball more solidly the last few days. Brian Pointer hit his 7th home run, and his 2nd this week, so maybe he is coming around a little also.  Kelly Dugan is 9 for his last 24(.375), and also hit 2 home runs this week.  Kyrell Hudson is really struggling offensively, but playing excellent defense as the outfielders get moved around on a daily basis.

storybook beginning for Berry

We have to start today in Minnesota, where Quintin "the catalyst" Berry lived up to his name, by getting 3 hits and a walk, stealing 2 bases, and starting both 2-run rallies for the Tigers in their 4-3 win over the Twins.  Oh, and don't forget the best part, a running diving catch in the 8th inning with 2 men on base to keep the game at 3-2 Twins, before he started the winning rally in the 9th.  "Q" is 8 for 21 (.381) with a 5-game hitting streak to begin his major league career!!

In Chicago, Gavin Floyd made his way through 5+ innings against the Indians, benefiting from the Sox offense in a 12-5 win.  Floyd allowed 5 runs on 10 hits, NO walks to improve to 4-5 on the year.  Lou Marson had a single off Floyd, and then took a pitch in the face and had to come out of the game.  Fortunately, it was a curve ball and the glancing blow caused a cut in Lou's mouth that required 3 stitches, and he is day-to-day..........In Los Angeles, Jay Happ was a victim of non-support, but pitched very well.  Happ (4-4) went 6.1 innings against the Dodgers, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned on 9 hits and 2 walks, striking out 10, but the Dodgers took a 5-1 decision from Houston............In Arlington, the Texas Rangers drilled Kyle Drabek and the Blue Jays, 12-6.  Kyle only lasted 3 innings and gave up 9 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks to fall to 4-5, 4.55 for the year.......In Phoenix, Mike Zagurski had a rough time for the Diamondbacks.  "Z-man" entered the game in the 6th inning with the Brewers ahead, 2-1.  Mike then gave up a hit and 3 walks, recording just 1 out before being removed.  Fortunately for him, only 1 of those runners scored and Arizona held on for a 4-3 win.

The win by Gavin was #26 for the HomeSide.

In St.Louis, Roy Halladay gave up a grand slam home run to Yadier Molina in the first, then left the game after the 2nd inning with shoulder soreness, and the Cardinals went on to beat the Phillies, 8-3.  Carlos Ruiz (.366) had 2 more hits, Freddy Galvis had a hit and scored a run, and Joe Savery threw 2 innings when Halladay had to come out early.  Savery allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk in his 2 innings of work.

In Atlanta, Gio Gonzalez won his 7th game of the year for the Nationals with a superb performance against the Braves.  Gio went 7 strong, and allowed just 1 hit and 3 walks, giving up 2 runs while striking out 10 Braves. The only hit off him was a Michael Bourn triple in the 3rd inning.  Bourn (.305) also walked and scored both runs for the Braves, as the Nationals won, 7-2.

Saturday's highlights

In Charlotte, the Knights edged the IronPigs, 3-2.  Domonic Brown (.241), Cody Overbeck (.269) and Kyle Hudson had 2 hits each for Lehigh Valley.  Tyler Cloyd was the starter and went 5.2 innings, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks, and receiving no decision.  Greg Golson was 0 for 4 for the Knights.

In Harrisburg, the Senators bested the R-Phils, 5-4.  Sebastian Valle had 2 hits, including his 4th home run of the year for Reading.  Drew Naylor was the starter and took the loss, going 5 innings and giving up 4 runs on 8 hits, NO walks.  Mike Cisco (1.40 ERA) threw 3 innings of relief, yielding 1 run on 4 hits, while striking out 7 of the 9 outs!

In Daytona, Drew Hillman homered for the Threshers lone run in their 3-1 loss to the Cubs. Hillman is hitting .345 since his promotion from Lakewood.

In Corpus Christi, Jonathan Villar (.265) had a walk off home run, one of his 2 hits on the night, to give the Hooks a 6-5 win over Springfield.  Jonathan Singleton (.325) also homered, his 9th, and now has 35 RBI on the year.  Josh Zeid threw 2 scoreless innings of relief for the Hooks.

In Salt Lake City, Travis d'Arnaud (.310) had a single, a double, 2 RBI and scored 2 runs, and Anthony Gose (.285) had 2 singles, a walk, stole his 18th base and scored 2 runs as the 51s shut out the Bees, 9-0........In Portland, the Sea Dogs swept a doubleheader from New Britain, 4-3 and 4-3.  Matt Rizzoti (.250) was 3 for 6 with a double and a walk on the day for the Rock Cats...........In Erie, Zack Segovia won his 5th game for the Sea Wolves in Erie's 7-3 win over Akron.  Zack (5-4, 5.20) went 6.2 innings, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks to post the victory...........In Bakersfield, Travis "Moose" Mattair had 2 hits and drove in a run for the Blaze in their 8-2 loss to San Jose.

Kyle throws a gem

Kyle Kendrick won his fisrt game of the year Saturday in St.Louis with a complete game shut out of the Cardinals.  Kyle (1-4, 4.10) allowed just 7 hits, and NO walks, striking out 4 while completing the game with just 94 pitches, 70 of them for strikes.  It was win #25 for the HomeSide this year in the majors.  Freddy Galvis went 0 for 4, but drove in a run, his 23rd so far in this rookie season, as the Phillies won, 4-0.

In St. Paul, Quintin Berry had another hit, this time an RBI single, and scored a run in Detroit's 4 run rally in the 5th inning as the Tigers doubled up the Twins, 6-3.  4 games into his major league career and Berry has a hit in every one of them!  Go, Q!

In Atlanta, the Nationals kept their hold on first place secure with an 8-4 win over the Braves.  Michael Bourn (.305) was 1 for 5 for the Braves.  After his power surge, Michael has cooled down a bit, going just 2 for 18 in the last 4 games.

In Pittsburgh, the Pirates scored a run in the 9th inning to edge the Cubs, 3-2.  Adrian Cardenas had a pinch hit double for Chicago. Meanwhile, back in Chicago, the White Sox pounded the Indians, 14-7.  Lou Marson was 1 for 3 and scored a run for the Tribe.  Lou should get his first significant playing time this week with regular catcher Carlos Santana suffering a concussion.  Eratic playing time has exacted a toll on Lou's timing at the plate, so maybe regular ABs this week can help him find his groove.

lots of hitting, and some pitching gems

We begin in St. Louis where Hunter Pence's 10th inning home run gave the Phillies a 5-3 win over the Cardinals.  Freddy Galvis and Carlos Ruiz had a hit apiece, with Ruiz surviving a tough, but clean,  collision at home plate with Yadier Molina.  Jacob Diekman faced 1 hitter, allowing a double into right-center, but a perfect relay from Victorino-to-Galvis-to-Ruiz nailed Molina!

In St Paul, Quintin "the catalyst" Berry had 2 hits, a walk, stole his 1st major league base, knocked in a run and scored twice to pace the Tigers to a 10-6 win over the Twins.  "Q" is 4 for 12 (.333) in his first 3 games for Detroit.  Today's Tigers v Twins match up is on MLBN @ 2:00 this afternoon............In Pittsburgh, the Pirates shut out the Cubs, 1-0.  Adrian Cardenas had a walk in 4 at bats for Chicago........In Cincinnati, the Rockies beat the Reds, 6-3.  Alfredo Simon (2.04) threw 2 scoreless frames for the Reds (1 hit, 2 Ks), and Josh Outman allowed a hit to the only hitter he faced for the Colorado.

In Harrisburg, Jonathan Pettibone evened his record at 4-4 with 8 solid innings for reading in their 3-1 win over the Senators.  "Bone" allowed just 1 run on 8 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 5.  Darin Ruf (.345) hit 2 home runs (that's 9 altogether) to pace the R-Phils attack............In Daytona, Anthony Hewitt and Cameron Rupp drove in 9th inning runs to give the Threshers a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Cubs.

Freddy paces Phils to win

Freddy Galvis had 3 hits Thursday night in St. Louis, including a double and 3 RBI as the Phillies won a wild 10-9 game.  After a slow start, Galvis has really picked up, and is now hitting .250.  Carlos Ruiz shook off that hit to his throwing hand Wednesday and popped out 3 more hits to raise his average to a lofty .366!!.. Could the HomeSide have the starting battery for the All-Star game (Hamels & Ruiz)?.... Jacob Diekman retired the only hitter he faced, and Antonio Bastardo threw an inning and gave up a rare run on 2 hits, but struck out Carlos Beltran with the game on the line and 2 men on in the 8th!  Bastardo's ERA went up to 1.98.

In Cleveland, the Indians completed the sweep of the Tigers, beating Justin Verlander, 2-1.  Quintin Berry had another double, a walk, and scored the Tigers lone run, while Lou Marson went 1 for 3 for the Indians........In Cincinnati, the Reds finished their sweep of the Braves with a 6-3 win.  Michael Bourn hit his 4th home run of the year, driving in 2 runs for Atlanta.  Bourn has hit 4 home run in his last 51 at bats, after hitting 4 in the prior 1000 at bats.

I am still Internet inhibited, so here we go as quickly as I can:

Oviedo impressive in debut

In Allentown, Dave Bush pitched a complete game shut out and the IronPigs won a game in which they recorded just 5 hits, a 2-0 win over Louisville. Steve Susdorf, Derrick Mitchell and Tim Kennelly had a hit each for Lehigh Valley.

A fantastic debut for Ramon Oviedo in Lakewood, who pitched 6 strong innings to power the BlueClaws to a 3-1 win over Delmarva. Ramon allowed just 1 run on 5 hits and 4 walks, and finished strong, getting his final 2 outs in the 6th with the tying runs on base!  Mario Hollands and Luis Paulino finished it off for Lakewood.  Harold Martinez (.272) had the only multi hit game for the BlueClaws.

We start Tuesday's recap in Houston where Jay Happ won his 4th game of the year for the Astros, a 2-1 win over the Cubs.  Happ (4-3, 4.56) went 6 innings and allowed just 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks, striking out 6.  The lone mistake was a home run ball to Alfonso Soriano........In Cincinnati, Michael Bourn (.323) had a double and 2 home runs, the first time in his career he has hit 2 in one game, but the Braves lost to the Reds, 4-3.

In Philadelphia, the Nationals beat the Phillies, 5-2.  Carlos Ruiz was 0 for 1, and was ejected for arguing balls and strikes, and Freddy Galvis (.236) was 1 for 4.  Jake Diekman recorded 5 outs, 4 by strike out, and allowed just 1 hit, and Antonio Bastardo struck out the only hitter he faced.........In Miami, the Marlins won a wild one, 7-6 over Colorado.  Josh Outman fanned the only hitter he faced for the Rockies.

Kyles go 1-1 Monday

In Philadelphia Monday night, in a great pitching duel between Kyle Kendrick and Gio Gonzalez, the Nationals squeaked out a 2-1 win over the Phillies.  Kendrick (0-4, but pitching better than that indicates) was the hard luck loser, going 7 strong innings and allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks, because Gonzalez (6-1, 1.98) threw 6 shut out frames, yielding just 3 hits while striking out 9.   The Phillies have now dropped 3 straight.

Cloyd is now 4-1, 1.97 with Lehigh Valley.  Tyson Brummett gave up 2 runs on 3 hits in his inning, and Cody Overbeck (.259) had the only multi-hit game for the Pigs, though the RBI went to Domonic Brown, Derrick Mitchell and Tim Kennelly.  Brown also threw out a runner at home.........In Reading Darin Ruf (.353) had 2 hits, including his 7th home run, and drove in 3 runs to help lead the R-Phils to a 10-4 spanking of New Britain.  Jonathan Pettibone won his 3rd game of the year with 5 innings of work.  He allowed 3 runs, just 1 earned, on 4 hits and 3 walks.  Lisalberto Bonilla worked 2 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits and 2 walks.  Troy Hanzawa continues his fine season, with 2 more hits to raise his average to .319.  Matt Rizzotti had 2 walks for the Rock Cats.

I am still having home computer issues, so I am on a public computer this morning, and have limited time, so here it is as fast as I can-

Some good pitching, and a couple of bombs

Between rain in the middle of the country and an off-day in the Florida State League, there was limited activity on Sunday.

In New Britain, Julio Rodriguez was the story with 6 1-hit innings against the Rock Cats in Reading's 6-4 win.  J-Rod (3-0, 2.25) did walk 5 and allow 1 UNearned run.  Troy Hazawa (.326) was 3 for 4, including a triple and 3 RBI, and Jiwan James (.236) also had 3 hits, while Steve Susdorf (.295) had a single and a double, driving in a run.

In Salt Lake City, Will Savage became the first minor leaguer to 7 wins, as Albuquerque hung on for a 10-7 win over the Bees.  Will went 6 innings, allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks, and is now 7-0, 3.40 for the Isotopes.

In Lakewood, the BlueClaws lost to Greensboro, 8-3.  Maikel Franco had 2 hits, including a 3-run home run (his 4th)  in the 1st inning to account for all the Lakewood runs.  Franco is reminding me of Leandro Castro, the way he swings hard on every pitch.  Franco, like Castro, swings as hard as anybody I have seen. It sure is sweet when he connects!

A forgettable day for our boys on the Las Vegas 51s, who dropped a 7-3 game in New Orleans.  Travis d'Arnaud (0 for 4, .266), Anthony Gose (1 for 4, RBI, .252, an error in the outfield), and Bobby Korecky (3 runs, 2 earned, 4 hits, just 1 out) will be having Mardi Gras nightmares after this one!

In Milwaukee, the Cubs battered the Brewers, 8-2.  Adrian Cardenas struck out in his only at bat, and is 1 for 10 so far since his call-up.......In St. Louis, Michael Bourn (.336) was 2 for 5 with an RBI for the Braves in their 7-4 win over the Cardinals.........In Phoenix, the Giants took a 7-3 decision from Arizona.  Mike Zagurski threw a scoreless inning (1 hit, 1 K) for the Diamondbacks.

pen leads Claws to win; another game winner for Tuffy

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon for baseball in Lakewood, the BlueClaws came from behind to beat the first place Grasshoppers, 5-3. Credit for this one goes to the bullpen,  After starter Kenny Giles ran out of gas in the 3rd inning (it was only his 2nd start and they are still stretching him out) Gabriel Arias came on and restored order with 3.1 innings of shutout ball (only 1 hit allowed)  to notch the victory.  Bryan Morgado threw a scoreless frame ( that's 9 straight scoreless innings for Bryan), as did Colton Murray and Matt CampbellMaikel Franco and Aaron Altherr drove in 2 runs each for the Claws.

In Louisville, Tuffy Gosewisch doubled in 2 runs in the top of the 10th inning  to give the IronPigs a 5-3 win over the Bats.  It was 1 of 2 hits on the night for Tuffy.  Mike Spidale had 3 hits including a home run, Derrick Mitchell walked twice and was on base for Gosewisch's big hit.  Tyson Brummett threw 2 perfect innings and Mike Schwimer notched his 4th save.  Joe Savery was used as a pinch hitter and had a lead off double in the 9th, which the team wasted.

If you are wondering about Quintin Berry, he has been granted bereavement leave by the Tigers due to the passing of his grandfather.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Q and his family during this difficult time.

good pitching, mixed results

In Louisville, the IronPigs rode strong pitching to a 4-1 win over the Bats.  Scott Elarton allowed just 1 hit over 6 shut out frames to win his 4th game for Lehigh Valley, and the 2 reassigned Phillies, Joe Savery and Mike Schwimer, finished it off.  Derrick Mitchell hit his 4th home run for the Pigs.  Elarton has been named International League pitcher of the week!

In New Britain, Trevor May took a no-hitter into the 7th inning for Reading, but a walk and a hit batter spelled the end of his night, and he was saddled with the loss in a 4-1 Rock Cats win.  Lisalberto Bonilla came on and gave up 3 more runs to seal the R-Phil's fate.  Reading got just 2 hits on the night, a single by Troy Hanzawa and a double from Sebastian Valle.

In Bradenton, Jesse Biddle threw a wonderful game, going 6.1 innings and allowing just 1 UNearned on 4 hits and 4 walks, striking out 8 in the Thresher's 3-2 win over the Marauders.  Tyler Knigge, retired 4 hitters, all with strike outs, although he did allow 2 hits, and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 0.95!  Anthony Hewitt doubled and scored the winning run in the 10th inning, and Jim Murphy had 2 hits and a walk for Clearwater.

In Lakewood, the BlueClaws made 5 errors and looked like they were into it in a 6-1 loss to Greensboro.  Shortstop Gustavo Gonzalez  made 3 of the errors, and with Tyler Greene being to extended spring training, something will have to give.   My guess is newly arrived Stephen Malcolm will be at short this afternoon.  Also, Bob Stumpo's bat has been a big help, but playing him at first base is not doing him or us any favors.

In Charlotte, Greg Golson (.308) doubled and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Knights a 3-2 win over Buffalo.  It was the 2nd double and 2nd run scored for Golson on the night, and he also threw out a runner at second base...........In Memphis, the Reno Aces took a 7-6 decision from the Redbirds, Randy Ruiz drove in his 35th run of the young season with a sacrifice fly.

2 out of 3 ain't bad

We start on the transaction wire this morning, where we found Jacob Diekman HAS been called up to the Phillies, along with Raul Valdes, Mike Fontenot,  and Hector Luna.  Also Justin De Fratus has been moved from the 15-day to the 60-day DL because of his right elbow problems.

Oakland has sent Michael Taylor back to AAA-Sacramento after less than a week, and the Colorado Rockies have activated Josh Outman.

Back on the field, Carlos Ruiz (.340) had 3 hits, including his 4th home run, and a walk, and drove in 3 runs to lead the Phillies to a 7-3 win over San Diego, snapping the skid.  Freddy Galvis had an RBI double to add to the cause, and back a good outing from Vance Worley.  Vance went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks, striking out 9 to notch his 3rd win of the season. Antonio Bastardo went the next 2 frames, allowing just 1 walk, to get his 3rd hold, and drop his ERA to 1.80.

In Chicago, Gavin Floyd continues to pitch very well, if under the radar, and tossed 7.2 shut out innings at the Royals, to lead the White Sox to a 5-0 win.  Gavin allowed just 5 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5 to improve to 3-3, 2.53 for the year.

The wins by Vance and Gavin give the HomeSide 16 major league wins for 2012.

In Milwaukee, the Brewers defeated Lendy Castillo with 13th inning run to gain an 8-7 win over the Cubs.  Castillo did not retire a hitter and allowed 2 hits and the game winning run.  A rule 5 selection last December, the Cubs have elected to keep Castillo on their roster, but they- and Lendy  are paying the price.  Castillo has a 7.04 ERA and may be a little overmatched, having not pitched in higher than A ball previously.

In Minnesota, the Twins defeated Kyle Drabek and the Blue Jays by the score of  7-6.  Drabek (2-4, 3.66) only made it through 4.1 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks, picking up 5 Ks on the way.........In St. Louis, Michael Bourn (.326) had 2 singles, a double, a walk, and scored a run the help the Braves to a 9-7, 12-inning victory over the Cardinals...........In Cincinnati, the Nationals defeated the Reds, 7-3.  Alfredo Simon (.2.63) threw 2 innings for the Reds, and gave up 1run on 3 hits, striking out 3.

The Minnesota Twins have designated Matt Maloney for assignment.

Diekman to show?

According to Mike Schwimer on twitter, Jacob Diekman has been called up to aid the ailing Phillies bullpen.  Moves had to be made after losing 3 in a row to the Mets, all of which the Phillies were leading and the pen let get away.  The Phillies have not made the announcement yet, and I don't think they will until just before the game tomorrow night against San Diego.

Ruf, Bone lead R-Phils to win

In Reading, Darin Ruf (.389) had 3 more hits, including his 5th home run and a double, and drove in 4 runs to back great pitching from Jonathan Pettibone in a 5-1 win over Trenton.  "Bone" came up just 1 out short of a complete game, allowing just 1 run on 6 hits and 2 walks, to improve to 2-3, 3.98 on the year.

Galvis 3 hits not enough

Freddy Galvis had a single, a double, and a triple, driving in 3 runs for the Phillies, but the Mets got to Kyle Kendrick for 5 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in his 1 inning of work to make it a sweep of the Philadelphia with a 10-6 win in Philly Wednesday night.........In Chicago, Michael Bourn's hitting streak was ended as he went 0 for 4 in the Braves 1-0 loss to the Cubs  Adrian Cardenas was 0 for 3 for Chicago......In Cleveland, Jason Donald was 1 for 4, driving in the Indian's lone run in an 8-1 defeat to the White Sox.
