In an unprecedented opening day doubleheader, the Reading Phillies got off to a great start on Thursday. Reading took the opener, 4-2 on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th inning by Leandro Castro. Sebastian Valle also homered, 1 of his 2 hits, and Darin Ruf chipped in with 2 more hits. Jonathan Pettibone opened with 6 strong innings, allowing just 1 run and scattering 10 hits and NO walks. BJ Rosenberg allowed a run on a hit in 2 innings, fanning 4 in the process, and the win went to Mike Cisco, who threw a scoreless 9th.
The nightcap went to Reading by the score of 7-4. Castro drove in 2 more runs in that game, with Cesar Hernandez (2 doubles, 2 RBI) and Mike Spidale getting 2 hits apiece. Tyson Brummett made the start, and gave Reading 3 frames, yielding a run on 1 hit. The victory goes to Chris Kissock, who struck out 4 of the 7 outs he recorded.
The Threshers dropped their opener, 6-3 to Dunedin. Jim Murphy had a 2-run double, but no Clearwater player had more than 1 hit. Hector Neris (1.1 IP) and Tyler Knigge (1-2-3 inning) both pitched well.
Jarred Cosart started the opener for Corpus Christi and gave the Hooks 4.1 innings of shutout ball en route to a 9-0 win over Northwest Arkansas. Jarred allowed 4 hits and 3 walks, striking out 5 in his 90-pitch outing. Jonathan Villar had a single, a double, an RBI and 2 stolen bases, and Jonathan Singleton had a walk and scored a run for the Hooks..............In Jacksonville, Jesus Sanchez recorded 5 outs, allowing 1 hit and striking out 2 for the Stars, as Huntsville dropped a 2-0 decision to the Suns.
In Durham, Yohan Flande tossed a scoreless inning for Gwinnett in the Braves' 4-3, 12-inning loss to the Bulls.............In Iowa City, Adrian Cardenas (0 for 3) drove in a run for the Cubs in their 5-3 win over Round Rock.............In Oklahoma City, RJ Swindel recorded a "hold", retiring 2 hitters for Memphis in their 4-3 win over the Red Hawks.............In Reno, Randy Ruiz had an RBI single for the Aces in their 5-2 win over Colorado Springs...........In Las Vegas, Michael Taylor had 3 hits, including a double, scored 2 runs and knocked in 2 more to help Sacramento top the 51s, 11-6. Anthony Gose was 0 for 5 in his AAA debut for Vegas, and Travis d'Arnaud walked twice and scored once for the 51s. Bobby Korecky threw the final 2 innings for Las Vegas, allowing a run on 2 hits and a walk.
