Reading made it 3 in a row to start the year with a 9-4 win over Portland Friday night. Jiwan James and Leandro Castro had 3 hits each, with James hitting a home run, scoring twice and driving in 2, while Castro had 2 singles, a double, a stolen base and scored 3 times. Tim Kennelly drove in 3 runs and Troy Hanzawa and Darin Ruf each picked up a hit. Trevor May was the starter and winner for the R-Phils, despite allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks over 5 innings. Trevor picked up 6 strike outs along the way, and Mike Cisco threw 2 shut out frames in relief.
In Clearwater, the Threshers were shut out in their home opener, 5-0 by Dunedin. Brody Colvin started and was tagged with the loss. Brody went 5 innings and allowed 4 runs on 7 hits and a walk, striking out 1. Garrett Claypool (2 IP 1 run, 2 hits) and Juan Sosa (1-2-3 inning) pitched well out of the pen. Cameron Rupp had the only 2-hit game for the Threshers.
In Jacksonville, Darren Byrd made his season debut for Huntsville with a scoreless inning (1 hit, 1 walk) of relief, recording a hold in the Stars' 5-4 win over the Suns. Jason Jaramillo made his debut for the Stars, and received 2 walks in 4 plate appearances...........In Corpus Christi, both Jonathan Villar and Jonathan Singleton were 0 for 4 each in the Hooks' 5-3 loss to the Naturals.
In Greenville, the BlueClaws won their first game this year, scoring 2 in the 8th and 2 more in the 9th for a 6-4 win over the Drive. Lakewood stole 8 bases in the game! Guantlett Eldemire had 3 hits, including a triple, and a walk and swiped 2 bags. Aaron Altherr and Brian Pointer both homered, while Kyrell Hudson stole 3 bases and scored 2 runs to help in the victory. Brian Morgado got the win out of the pen, and Ryan Duke picked up the save.
