The Kansas City Royals defeated the Reds and Matt Maloney on Friday night, 4-1. Maloney was pitching well, having given up 2 runs over his first 5 innings, but then gave up a 2-run home with 2 down in the 6th to Alberto Callaspo. His final line was 6 IP, 4 runs, 6 hits, 2 walks, 5 strike outs. Good enough to earn another start.
The Phillies put Scott Eyre on the 15-day DL and recalled Kyle Kendrick yesterday. Kyle got into the game in the 12th inning last night, and after throwing a scoreless frame, was roughed up for 3 in the 13th by the Red Sox. I am not sure how I feel about this move, because Kyle is a starting pitcher, and right now, the Phillies rotation is set. I hope this doesn't hurt Kyle mentally, as it has some of the other starters who the Phillies tried to use out of the pen. The game reached extra innings thanks to Ryan Howard's 19th home run of the year in the bottom of the 9th inning. It was home run #196 in Ryno's career, surpassing Bobby Abreu on the all time Phillies list.
In Pittsburgh, the Tigers topped the Pirates, 3-1. Jason Jaramillo (.280) was 2 for 3 for Pittsburgh.
Antonio Bastardo (2-0) is scheduled for the Phillies tonight against the Sox and Josh Outman (4-0) will draw the assignment in San Francisco for the Athletics.
