Jon Velasquez won his league leading 9th game of the season, and the Lakewood BlueClaws won their third straight game, topping Lake County, 4-2 Saturday night. 7 different BlueClaws had hits, led by Anthony Gose, who had 3, including a double, and Harold Garcia, who had 2 and an RBI. Travis D'Arnuad picked up his team leading 36th RBI (tied for 5th in the league) and D'Arby Myers also drove in a run with a 2nd inning single. Myers easily could have had another hit, but for a questionable scoring on his infield ground ball in the 8th inning which was ruled a 2-base error on pitcher Mike McGuire and probably should have been a hit and an error.
Velasquez threw 7 great innings, allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits, again NO walks, and 3 strike outs. Jon has walked only 14 hitters in 63.2 innings so far this year. Justin DeFratus retired all 4 hitters he faced, striking out 2 of them, and Ryan Bergh recorded his 10th save by getting the final 2 outs. The BlueClaws improved to 36-24, and with Delmarva splitting their doubleheader in Hagerstown, Lakewood now leads the division by 3 games. The Claws have 10 games remaining in the last 8 days of the first half in their quest for first ever first half division title.
Lakewood will send Tyler Cloyd (6-3) this afternoon, looking for the sweep of the Captains.
