Suns top BlueClaws

The Hagerstown Suns defeated the BlueClaws 4-3 Tuesday night. Tyler Cloyd took the hard luck loss to fall to 6-3. Tyler gave up 3 runs in the 2nd inning, but was victimized by bad luck. 2 of the hits were infield hits and then an error by Travis Mattair let in the 3rd run. Overall, Cloyd pitched 6 innings, allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and 2 walks. Santo Hernandez came in to throw 3 shut out innings and give the team a chance to comeback, but Lakewood was unable to come up with the big when they needed it.

Steve Susdorf had 2 more hits, including a home run, and Troy Hanzawa had 2 doubles. Hanzawa'a second double, leading off the bottom of the 8th, put the Claws in good shape. When he advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, it looked like Lakewood was knocking on the door. Consecutive strike outs by all stars Harold Garcia and Anthony Gose, and a line drive out by Travis D'Arnaud ended that threat. (Travis D'Arnaud has had no luck. He hits 2 or 3 balls hard every night, but none of them seem to find the holes. I can only hope if he keeps hitting the ball this hard, he will eventually start to see some results. Hang in there, Travis!!)

Jim Murphy hit an inside the park home run off the top of the center field wall in the 9th inning to draw Lakewood within 1 run. Mattair followed with a double and again it looked like Lakewood was in business. Hagerstown closer Osvaldo Rodriguez then struck out Sebastian Valle and Zack Collier to end the game and leave thinking about lost opportunities.

The loss combined with Delmarva's 6-4 win over Lake County reduces Lakewood lead in the division to 1.5 games was 14 to go. Jason Knapp will try to get us back on track Wednesday night.

Cloyd shouldn't have lost that game. Bats came up short late by stranding runners in scoring position. They could have gotten him off the hook.

absolutely!!

they had Hanzawa at third with no out in the 8th and didn't score, then had Mattair at 2nd with 1 out in the 9th and left him there....
very frustrating!
