Antonio Bastardo became the 28th former BlueClaw (and 3rd this season) to get to the major leagues, and he was just as impressive as he has been throughout his minor league career. The diminutive 23-year old Dominican baffled the San Diego Padres last night, obtaining his first major league win with 6 strong innings of work. He allowed just 1 run on 4 hits and 1 walk as the Phillies pounded an under-the-weather Jack Peavy for 4 in the first en route to a 10-5 win.
Bastardo will make another start Sunday night on national TV (ESPN) against the Dodgers in LA.
In Houston, Michael Bourn (.290) had a single, a hustle double, a walk, a sacrifice, scored a run and stole his 17th base, as the Astros took a 3-2, 11-inning decision from the Colorado Rockies. Speaking of the Rockies, Taylor Buchholz, who has not pitched due to strained elbow this year, has been throwing simulated games in Arizona, and the Rockies are hopeful he will be back with them before the end of June.
In another interesting note, the Cincinnati Reds have placed Edinson Volquez on the disabled list, and are considering bringing up Matt Maloney, their hottest minor league hurler at this point, to make a couple of starts. For Maloney, this could be an opportunity much like the one Kyle Kendrick got a couple of years ago, which eventually had Kyle winning 20 major league decisions over a 2 year span.
